Offseason Post #1 2019 - Thoughts on the off-season so far...

Hey all!! Just decided to stop in, say hello, and post my thoughts on whats transpired this off-season. As always, feel free to ignore entirely as I'm sure many will. :D

1) QB: Obviously, Jimmy G is the man, but I was happy to see they didn't trade Mullens. I don't know if that were ever a possibility, but if he's as good as he played late last year, He is great insurance for Jimmy, he's got a few years left on that rookie deal, and his value will likely only go up. I think its pretty clear though that CJs days are numbered. Surely people still attack the pick to begin with, but IMO you can't destroy the pick of CJ and at the same time ignore the FA find in Mullens. Draft is a crap shoot. You certainly won't hit on all and its best to simply ignore draft position and just see what players come through for you regardless of original draft position.

2) Dee Ford: I mean clearly it depends on which Dee Ford we get, but on the surface of it I really like it. This tram has needed an edge rusher for a really long time and at no time was in more apparent than late in games last year. They needed that Leo position BADLY. He fits the bill pretty perfectly. It kinda reminds me of when the Seahawks signed Cliff Avril and Michael Bennett. Cliff Avril to me was an overrated Speed rusher from Detroit. Bennett I though a flash in the pan.

WOW was I wrong. Those guys tormented the 49ers for years. Ford is perfect in that Avril role and as for the Bennett role....

3) Nick Bosa: We don't yet know if Bosa is the guy, but I really hope he is. Its funny...All of the sudden when I watch analysis of him online I see stuff like, "when maybe is isn't that great". "He isn't an elite athlete and that's a top pick". "He isn't the fastest guy". "He's got a great motor and he has elite hands, but...".

Right. If HE isn't worthy of a top pick, then who is? Q Williams? Right. I really like the guy and if Q is the pick, so be it, but people act like somehow he's a surer bet than Bosa and that's ludicrous. Moreover, its not a position of need. It reminds me of the Manning/Leaf debate many years ago. Manning: Finished Product. Already reached his ceiling. Leaf: Much better athlete. Much higher upside. Yeah. OK.

I'm not suggesting Q will be Leaf, but whenever I read that a guy has already reached him max potential, I keep looking at the players who they said that about and how they played in the league. I wan't Bosa. I want to fix the Pass Rush THIS YEAR. I want to see Solomon Thomas playing Inside all and make people figure out who the hell you double....Ford, Buckner, Bosa, or Thomas.

4) WR: I feel like pick #36 is reserved for whatever WR is left to pick, but I wouldn't be surprised to see them move up into the bottom of the 1st round to take a guy Kyle really likes. Who do I like? I'm all about AJ Brown. I think he has the potential to be a superstar in Kyles Offense. Having said that, I could also see Parris Campbell or Deebo Samuel, who couldn't be more different from each other, but I think both would be good. Both of those guys would be good after the catch, but with very different styles. Kyle is great at getting guys into space.

As for Free Agents/Trade? I NEVER thought Antonio Brown was an option. Never. There was a time they were looking for veteran leadership. Guys like Elvis Dumervil or Pierre Garcon. That time is over. They didn't need an expensive, aging vet who just had a personality conflict with his previous team. That is not their MO. Beckham? I think they wanted him bad, but were right to not let the 2nd pick go without getting #6 in return. Matthews? Honestly, I'm not convinced at this point he even makes the team.

5) Kwon: I ain't gonna lie. I was a bit shocked at that signing, but I don't hate it. I see what they are doing. You gotta ignore the $$$ as its pretty much Monopoly money in the grand scheme. Its just the way the business works. It seems like they are almost looking at a Jacksonville model with those LBs who just so happen to run the same defensive scheme. :D I know, what a coincidence. :) It does though highlight the Reuben Foster mistake, and I think we can call it that. It sucks because the dude has so much ability, but I really don't think the team had a choice here. They made a team rule, he broke it. Bye.

6) Tevin Coleman: Didn't see that one coming at all. Love. It.

7) Jason Verrett: That's a real nice roll of the dice. I mean its possible that he'll just never be able to stay healthy. Its also possible its just been an extraordinary string of bad luck. I mean Frank Gore tore ACLs in back to back years in College and that dude is STILL playin'. One year deal, Scheme fit, Very Good player when healthy, what the hell?

8) Safety: This one I don't get...and it isn't the failure of the 49ers to sign one that has me confused. Its the fan base insistence that they so desperately needed one. Yeah, Earl Thomas would have been nice, but was that really necessary? The 49ers secondary struggled badly last year, but alot of that can be helped with improved pass rush and more importantly, Jimmy Garoppolo wasn't the only 49er who got hurt last year. At this point last year, everyone was singing the praises of Adrian Colbert. He did struggle a bit before being lost for the year, but that guy is still on the team. So is Jimmie Ward. So Is Jaquiski Tartt. So is Marcell Harris. The real issue last year for me was injury and the CB opposite Sherman. Between Verrett, Witherspoon, Moore, and a greatly improved pass rush, I never saw Safety as a huge need position this off-season.

9) Arizona: Methinks they've just gotten way to frustrated with Russell WIlson and figured they needed their own Hobbit QB. In all seriousness though, I have alot of questions about Murray, but Wilson and Murray would highlight the 49ers need for speed on D. Dee and Kwon make alot of sense.

10) Draft: Is it draft time yet?
Yea safety and WR just have to be addressed in the draft and if they don't find the answers then it'll be next year. Hopefully Bosa is the pick but I wouldn't' be upset about Allen or a trade down if possible. Ford will be nice. The guy is improving. I like Kwon but did seem we hit the overpay button but it's not my bread. We overpaid for Malcolm Smith who is garbage so itn's not to surprising. JV will be the best pick up if he can stay healthy. We really need a CB across from Sherm to step it up. Overall good off season so far.
Good stuff. Thanks.
Didn't do enough. It's been this way for 3 years.

So are you really a Steelers fan and have like this weird secret crush on the 49ers?
Glad to see you back Marvin. Been awhile.
Marvin:
Thanks for your thoughts, I always enjoy your observations. Any thoughts on the Oline? Is it a solid line and what do you think the FO will do in the draft to help the line. Any thoughts on the new coaches?

Hi, Marv and look forward to your posts. We missed them .Slight difference of opinion on WR early. #2 is already decided. If Bosa gone, i still think it is Josh Allen, not Q. Taking one MORE DT, jus isn't going to happen again. Right now GM John has to figure which of the umpteen-eleven DTs he is going to cut, who will go elsewhere and start. And at a lot of places, not just some loser team.

Finally, kyle is going to have to spend a high pick on an OG. It is just way overdue, and we got two guys starting that aren't starters. Both have a yrs experience playing now, and that helps. But we need a bona fide OG starter and then one of current two OGs is a starter off the bench...finally some talent at a backup OL position. kYle has just been lucky so far...JG is going to get permanently maimed if he gets as beaten up as our 126 QB hit QBs got last yr. So it is time and OG at #2 is what should be done. Kyle will probably do as you say, but that is a bad choice. Besides he already has Brieda and other RBs, Au Jus, kittle, pettis , Jet, TT, Celek(?), so there is no crying need for yet another. OG starter? Yup, huge need. So we'll see.

Know you don't like taking a S, but at either #36 or #66 we take the OG, and the other slot is for S, BPA.. Yes we have the 4 guys you mentioned but we had not much there, there, last yr in the DB column. Sherm...and that was it. So we'll see, but i am on for OG/S after our DE. Honestly, i hope we don't burn 1 pick on a WR. I would like that big 6'3" sticky fingered, always open EZ WR, but ...so would every other team. Don't see that happening. I hope for OG and OT picks rd 4-6 for our OL Pipeline. Seeing Richburg actually be healthy would be nice too. So you probably are right...kyle still is HC and he makes the picks...this yr, i hope he goes OG/S..thru rd 3.

Coaches: I love the Welker hire. He's a guy who worked for it and can teach that.

O-Line: Assuming they stay healthy, I think they can be good. Guards are the problem. I like Tomlinson, but on the other side I thin one of those guys will be good enough. I can see them drafting someone as well. Good news is you are looking for athleticism at that position while other teams are looking for girth. They might be able to find someone who fits them late on draft day.

2 words for o-line, Alex. Bars. Good pulling guard, has had good college offensive line coaching, already has developed chemistry with McGlinchey, can be had later on in the draft due to his injury and despite his injury should be ready for camp or if nothing else the regular season.

I believe the DL and DB coach they hired could be the biggest additions to the team. Under Fangio and his staff whom ever was put in the line up played pretty well. With the DL and DB coach they had the past few years there was to many inconsistencies. Players playing out of position and not growing each week.

As for the draft Bosa/Allen and at 36 Hakeem Butler or Erik McCoy are my hope. Butler has the physical traits to be special and McCoy will take a starting Guard job before mid season

I wouldn't be shocked if they took a safety, but IMO Free Agency and the trade market tipped their hand. They ignored Earl Thomas altogether and were all in for OBJ and were willing to give up draft capital. I think they want a WR with that second pick and might move up to get the one they want.

The question is who is the one they want? I like AJ Brown. I like Deebo and Parris less, but still like them. The good thing here is there are ALOT of WRs who are in that late 1/early 2 area that SOMEONE should fall to them at 36 is they choose not to move. If a Safety they like and didn't expect to be there falls to them, I can see them pulling that trigger.

Keep in mind tho, when it comes to who the Niners will pick, I'm usually wrong. :) I think the only picks over the years I've been right on were Crab and Buckner....so don't listen to me. :D Last year I was all in on Roquon Smith. The year before I liked Fournette and Mahomes (but in fairness hoped he'd be there in round 2....which wasn't close to true).

Having said all that, my prediction is Bosa and AJ. :D
first 4 round should be an EDGE, WR, FS, and OL(OG or OT), I have an ideal fantasy, and it's this.

Trade back to 6 get 17 and a 2020 2nd, take an EDGE like Sweat at 6, DK Metcalf at 17, and then trade back into late rd 1, get Nassir Adderley the FS from Delaware.

I think Maybe the trade back to 6 ship has sailed with OBJ. Wouldn't mind it, but I don't think that happens. I prefer AJ to DK.
