Shanahan really wanted Odell and after this failed trade, the Giants are not an option for 49ers. Trade with Raiders is the route to go if the team is willing to pass on Bosa

Why would you think that? Just b/c one trade doesn't go through doesn't mean another one can't with the same team.
If the Niners trade with Oakland at #4, pick Burns, do not pass go. He will be the best edge rusher out of the entire draft.

Logical but knowing lynch he will draft a kicker and a punter with his 2nd and 3rd picks

based on that statement, its' sarcasm aside, you clearly don't know Lynch at all and haven't been paying any attention to anything he has done or said over the past two years. I just never cease to be amazed at what comes out of the woodwork of a public forum

I don't think no trade can happen with Giants, but makes little sense to me for Giants to trade 6 and 17 to go up to 2 when they could have HAD 2 by trading OBJ to SF. 17 is the pick they got in the trade, so I doubt they package it when they didn't need to before.

Hey all!! Just decided to stop in, say hello, and post my thoughts on whats transpired this off-season. As always, feel free to ignore entirely as I'm sure many will. :D

1) QB: Obviously, Jimmy G is the man, but I was happy to see they didn't trade Mullens. I don't know if that were ever a possibility, but if he's as good as he played late last year, He is great insurance for Jimmy, he's got a few years left on that rookie deal, and his value will likely only go up. I think its pretty clear though that CJs days are numbered. Surely people still attack the pick to begin with, but IMO you can't destroy the pick of CJ and at the same time ignore the FA find in Mullens. Draft is a crap shoot. You certainly won't hit on all and its best to simply ignore draft position and just see what players come through for you regardless of original draft position.

2) Dee Ford: I mean clearly it depends on which Dee Ford we get, but on the surface of it I really like it. This tram has needed an edge rusher for a really long time and at no time was in more apparent than late in games last year. They needed that Leo position BADLY. He fits the bill pretty perfectly. It kinda reminds me of when the Seahawks signed Cliff Avril and Michael Bennett. Cliff Avril to me was an overrated Speed rusher from Detroit. Bennett I though a flash in the pan.

WOW was I wrong. Those guys tormented the 49ers for years. Ford is perfect in that Avril role and as for the Bennett role....

3) Nick Bosa: We don't yet know if Bosa is the guy, but I really hope he is. Its funny...All of the sudden when I watch analysis of him online I see stuff like, "when maybe is isn't that great". "He isn't an elite athlete and that's a top pick". "He isn't the fastest guy". "He's got a great motor and he has elite hands, but...".

Right. If HE isn't worthy of a top pick, then who is? Q Williams? Right. I really like the guy and if Q is the pick, so be it, but people act like somehow he's a surer bet than Bosa and that's ludicrous. Moreover, its not a position of need. It reminds me of the Manning/Leaf debate many years ago. Manning: Finished Product. Already reached his ceiling. Leaf: Much better athlete. Much higher upside. Yeah. OK.

I'm not suggesting Q will be Leaf, but whenever I read that a guy has already reached him max potential, I keep looking at the players who they said that about and how they played in the league. I wan't Bosa. I want to fix the Pass Rush THIS YEAR. I want to see Solomon Thomas playing Inside all and make people figure out who the hell you double....Ford, Buckner, Bosa, or Thomas.

4) WR: I feel like pick #36 is reserved for whatever WR is left to pick, but I wouldn't be surprised to see them move up into the bottom of the 1st round to take a guy Kyle really likes. Who do I like? I'm all about AJ Brown. I think he has the potential to be a superstar in Kyles Offense. Having said that, I could also see Parris Campbell or Deebo Samuel, who couldn't be more different from each other, but I think both would be good. Both of those guys would be good after the catch, but with very different styles. Kyle is great at getting guys into space.

As for Free Agents/Trade? I NEVER thought Antonio Brown was an option. Never. There was a time they were looking for veteran leadership. Guys like Elvis Dumervil or Pierre Garcon. That time is over. They didn't need an expensive, aging vet who just had a personality conflict with his previous team. That is not their MO. Beckham? I think they wanted him bad, but were right to not let the 2nd pick go without getting #6 in return. Matthews? Honestly, I'm not convinced at this point he even makes the team.

5) Kwon: I ain't gonna lie. I was a bit shocked at that signing, but I don't hate it. I see what they are doing. You gotta ignore the $$$ as its pretty much Monopoly money in the grand scheme. Its just the way the business works. It seems like they are almost looking at a Jacksonville model with those LBs who just so happen to run the same defensive scheme. :D I know, what a coincidence. :) It does though highlight the Reuben Foster mistake, and I think we can call it that. It sucks because the dude has so much ability, but I really don't think the team had a choice here. They made a team rule, he broke it. Bye.

6) Tevin Coleman: Didn't see that one coming at all. Love. It.

7) Jason Verrett: That's a real nice roll of the dice. I mean its possible that he'll just never be able to stay healthy. Its also possible its just been an extraordinary string of bad luck. I mean Frank Gore tore ACLs in back to back years in College and that dude is STILL playin'. One year deal, Scheme fit, Very Good player when healthy, what the hell?

8) Safety: This one I don't get...and it isn't the failure of the 49ers to sign one that has me confused. Its the fan base insistence that they so desperately needed one. Yeah, Earl Thomas would have been nice, but was that really necessary? The 49ers secondary struggled badly last year, but alot of that can be helped with improved pass rush and more importantly, Jimmy Garoppolo wasn't the only 49er who got hurt last year. At this point last year, everyone was singing the praises of Adrian Colbert. He did struggle a bit before being lost for the year, but that guy is still on the team. So is Jimmie Ward. So Is Jaquiski Tartt. So is Marcell Harris. The real issue last year for me was injury and the CB opposite Sherman. Between Verrett, Witherspoon, Moore, and a greatly improved pass rush, I never saw Safety as a huge need position this off-season.

9) Arizona: Methinks they've just gotten way to frustrated with Russell WIlson and figured they needed their own Hobbit QB. In all seriousness though, I have alot of questions about Murray, but Wilson and Murray would highlight the 49ers need for speed on D. Dee and Kwon make alot of sense.

10) Draft: Is it draft time yet?
This seems like a pretty good assessment to me. Not sure what they will do at #36, assuming they hold onto the pick, I think a lot will depend on what they really think of the receivers they already have in the building and whether or not there is anyone available at that slot who they would consider an obvious upgrade. During his five game winning streak Jimmy was putting up almost 300 yards a game with a bunch of "guys" at the position, at least three of whom aren't even on the team anymore. If they can get Bourne to run the correct routes and if Goodwin comes back healthy and with his head screwed on right, they might be willing to roll with what they have for the moment. I think Taylor comes back strong this year, especially with the Welker hire and James will have a year of experience under his belt which should help.

To me Alexander is perhaps their biggest acquisition this year. IF he can come back healthy he and Warner could make quite a pair, and if Lee continues to develop they would have three fluid, attacking LB's who always seem to be moving towards the ball. Ford seems like a pretty easy call and almost anything he brings will be an upgrade over what we had at the position last year. My only concern is that with his signing they might deicide to pass on one of the top edge guys in this draft. Lynch has talked a lot about wanting to get after opposing QB's more and get off the field on third downs with a sack. Two guys able to get around the corner would really open up the possibilities for the interior guys we have. It could be quite something to see.

Verrett seems like a low risk high reward signing plus they are bringing in more bodies for the offensive line which can't hurt. Hopefully one of them will provide an upgrade to the depth there.

Coleman was a bit of a head scratcher but after all of the injuries they had there last year it certainly can't hurt and will make all of the other guys at the position have to work a little harder. It also allows the to take their time with McKinnon.

I don't follow college football so don't know anything about Bosa beyond what the draft guys say and they all seem to think he is the top prospect in the draft. I am intrigued by Allen though and have this feeling that Bosa might not be all that people think he will be at this level. So many guys just tear it up in college and then never can find their game in the NFL. Generally speaking though, my attitude is to wait and see. If he is the pick I will hope for the best and will try to avoid getting too worked up about it if Allen becomes the better pro.

Its funny that you say that RE: Bosa because that's EXACTLY what I think of Allen. I don't dislike him, but I think he his numbers are inflated and I don't think he'll reproduce them.

As for Bosa, he does the things that I think translate to the NFL. He may not ever be Khalil Mack, but he'll be a very good all around DE for many years if he stays healthy.

Your take on Q is a bit off... he is the most disruptive prospect in this class. It's not just because he put up insane combine numbers, he has the best tape and consistency play in and play out of any prospect last season. Bosa is no slouch either, just not as many "Ohhh Sh**t!!" moments on a play by play basis.

Bosa or Q is a win/win situation, whichever way they go the pass rush is gonna be much improved.

And as always, love the content you put out Marvin.

Don't get me wrong. I like Q. If he's the pick its a solid one. He killed it last year.

My point was more that all of the sudden now Bosa has all these flaws. Its a natural part of the draft process. I remember when Justin Smith was drafted and all the comments were that his arms were too short. Then when he came over as a free agent he only had 2 sacks the year before, waste of money.

If Bosa is Justin Smith (not saying he is, just illustrating a point) I think we'd all be pretty damn happy with that.

This is what happens. When a guy is built up, there comes a turning point when all of the sudden people want to pull him down. That's what is happening with Bosa. Is he going to be Lawrence Taylor? Probably not. Is he going to be one of the better DE in the NFL? Probably.

Moreover, people make that "he's maxed out" argument all the freakin time and then the guy continues to improve into a GREAT player. Manning is a great example. The assumption is if you take the better athlete they can learn to be better and then be REALLY good. The problem is that it seldom works that way. I guy who is a great athlete doesn't always become a great player. A guy who is a great player and a really good athlete continues to improve.

The way I like to think of it is that great players are just great players so it makes total sense that Bosa would dominate in college. If he couldn't dominate in college, how can you dominate in the pro's? Two players who were dominant when on the field are Bosa and Q.Williams so I'd be happy to have either one. I see them as players you can build a defense around. On a side note, I always thought Thomas was a guy they built up in the draft cycle because of one really good game he had, Bosa is different.

Aaron Rodgers was the most ready to play and the team went with Alex Smith because he was taller and faster. And he stepped on a ball when commanded to. Riley Ridley is one to watch, his route running is getting great reviews but everyone has him in the third round because he had a slow 40 time.

Isn't there one guy in the draft this year that does both? Get him and save a roster spot on Sundays.
Off season going great. Now at last, the draft.
This has been a VERY underwhelming free agency period. I hope this team nails it on draft day.
