Wide Receivers: who gets cut

With our two new additions, we have 11 wide receivers on our roster. Assuming we keep 6 on the roster, which 5 don't make it? Smallwood, McCaffrey and Dunbar seem like 3 obvious ones as they've been on the bottom of the depth chart.

Goodwin, Pettis, Mathews, Samuel seem to be the only 4 locks to make the active roster.

That would leave Hurd, Bourne, Taylor, James to complete for 2 spots. It seems pretty unfathomable that they'd cut Hurd, a high 3rd round pick. They may plan using him at TE eventually, but he's never played that position before. Bourne was our leading receiver last year, but James is our return man. I think Taylor may be the odd man out, because we don't need another slot receiver, and he's been injured. With his frame, he probably shouldn't play long in the NFL anyway.
Hurd won;'t be cut as a 3rd rd pick, so it's really a 1 man race IMO.
I wouldn't call Mathews a lock. Hurd is more of a lock than him simply because teams don't cut 3rd round picks often.
Goodwin will be a surprise cut. He might not be committed with this Olympics crap that he keeps talking about

He's such an awesome weapon when healthy though, but I don't expect him to be a starter. I think I've heard Kyle talking about playing him less so he doesn't take as much of a pounding.

You could be right about that, he hasn't gotten much action since coming off his injury in 2017. The Patriots just flat out cut him before buffalo signed him.

The cuts in most part will be pretty obvious:

  • Smallwood
  • McCaffrey
  • Dunbar
  • Taylor (Just way too slow)
  • Goodwin (I don't know what are the financial implications, but between him and Richie James, I would rather take James. Goodwin has been like glass and doesn't play hard enough in my opinion)
Goodwin will not be cut. He had an awesome rapport with Jimmy G at the end of 2017 so they will be looking to duplicate that this year.

I agree. I also wouldn't call Goodwin a lock too. Bourne, Goodwin and Taylor's days are numbered. IMO

That's ancient history already. Every year is different in the NFL. Jimmy now has some shinny new toys to his disposal. I am pretty sure he will be spending more time to build rapport and get the timing down with these new guys. Come on, think about it, he now has Jordan Matthews, Deebo and Hurd.

I think Trent Taylor is trade bait - Vikings, Broncos, or Patriots could really use him, and he's worth a 5th or 6th round pick when healthy.

The final 6:

X: Pettis/Goodwin
Z: Hurd*/Matthews*
Y: Samuel*/James

This^...end of the question.
Goodwin is not getting cut
I love the fat that these guys now have to compete for a spot on the team.

Iron sharpens iron!
I doubt Goodwin gets cut. His ability as a deep threat is unmatched.
