come backs to the question.

What 4th round pick do you think is better then him?

You are only lying to yourself if you think he was anything other then above average.

Football outsiders, who track average punts from average distances, then compare performance based on field position ranked Mitch as the 7th best punter in the league.

I personally tend to rate "return yards" more in to effect, Mitch had very few returnable balls last year and was one of the hardest punters to return on last year, that plus his bias for putting a ball out of play makes me think he was closer to the 5th best punter in the league. But again, Football outsiders looks at what the average punter would do being set up as well as Mitch was. Mitch very much benefited from a strong offense getting him to mid field with regularity, so football outsiders compares to what the average punter would do on in similar situations. Then ranks ALL punters based on their performance on like punts.

Ill give them that, we tend to judge Mitch based on the whole of the team, but according to football outsiders, there are 6 other punters who could out perform him (mostly to a slight degree). When you factor slight degrees of separation from most of the top 5 performers with his rookie salary, and handling kick off duties..... yea.... Mitch was a great pick.

And he can tackle a returner when everyone else fails

well until we see the 49ers consistently leverage his random rugby skills, thats a serious outlier.

I imagine those conversation must be awesome.

Mitch " I want to ............"

Everyone on defense " Noooooo just punt the ball........"

Chauncey Gardner Johnson was available at our original pick in the 4th round and should have been the pick.
You know the off-season is going slowly when the thread about the punter is at the top of NT.

How does Mitch have "rugby skills" if he never plaid rugby?

It is not a skill handed down by genetics by just being Australian. You actually have to play the games.

Australian Rules Football is as similar to rugby as soccer is to NFL

It is a common error. All the Aussie punters in the NFL come from Aussie Rules. Guys like Jarhead Hayne played Rugby League.

I still can't stand this pick. 4th and other late round picks have been Gold for this team. Kittle, Greenlaw, DJ Jones, etc. Can't believe they wasted on an old, weak legged, below average punter. Nothing about him impressed me last year. Infact there were undrafted punters that ate his lunch last year. I doubt he's getting any better/stronger. Dude's already in his late twenties.

Of all the players drafted by Shanny/Lynch, this one really annoys me.

He's the same age as Jimmy G. As a rookie lol and people still defend this pick. Sigh

So you guys think players hit their ceiling as a rookie?

No but a rookie year at a position with minimal change is usually a good precursor of ones career such as kickers and punters. And when you factor in Mitchs age (currently 28) with his mediocre play spending a 4th rounder on him looks like it was a minor mistake.

Minimal change? They asked him to handle kickoffs too. He just didnt need to punt a lot, that's a good thing btw. When he was asked to punt he was good at pinning teams inside the 20, that's also good btw. The other major job of a punter is to get hang time and prevent returns and TD's, he was one of the best in the league at that, once again...that's a good thing.

What exactly was it again that was mediocre? His age?

He sucked as a holder and contributed to missed points. He sucked in kick offs with his weak noodle leg. His punts were mediocre at best, with plenty of shanks. Dudes almost 30, which is a joke.

Exactly! Punter in the 4th round better be a perennial all pro/pro bowler. His old a** is gonna see a social security check before he sees a pro bowl invite.

Medicare Mitch will be Mediocre at best. Needs to really dedicate himself to even have a chance at mediocre. Waste of a pick. Should've been a mid season walk on, not a 4th.
Having all those punts with zero return yards and then getting that fumble in the divisional game with a trick kick was worth it for me
