As opposed to almost all of the other players on the list above who were drafted in the 4th round. They saw a player they liked in a position of need so they took a flyer on him. If he doesn't work out the way they hoped he will be no different than any of the other guys on that list, regardless of his position.

This x10! It's like taking a RB #1 overall. Damn well be a generational talent. Definitely about expectations associated with draft position. Countless udfa's could replace/surpass old Mitch.

Other bad picks don't justify this pick at all. 4th on a punter is unconscionable, especially a mediocre one. Should we take a flyer on a long snapper with a top three pick since we wasted a high pick on Solly?
Anything above a 7th, he better be an ncaa all time great candidate shattering records.
Can't believe people keep going on about his gimmicks, and forget that his regular punt/kickoffs are mediocre at best.

I suspect the difference between Kyle Shanahan and many of the posters here is that he knows exactly how unlikely it is for a low pick to stick. To get a view on his possible perspective, check out the all-time draft page and see how many 4th round picks stuck around. Street did, but largely on I/r. DJ, but not much of a contribution. Last time I checked Joe Looney was still in the NFL, somewhere. You have to go back to Dashon Goldston in 2007, maybe Michael Robinson in 06, and Sopoaga and Brandon Lloyd before that. It isn't much to show for nearly a quarter of a century of 4th round picks. And under various different Front Offices.
Obviously, from low picks, very occasionally the likes of a Kittle appears.but it is rare. So I suspect it boils down to, the team wanted a punter and the guy looked good. No one springs out as this year's Kittle or Tom Brady but the need for a punter is undeniable.
I don't think teams in general value draft picks in the way that fans do.

What is Wish doing wrong exactly? He may not be the best punter in the league but statistically he top 5-10 in every category.

At least they avoided wasting the more important 5th-rounder on him.

And why is that? Because you say so. It doesn't bother me at all. How is a mediocre punter any different than a mediocre lineman or safety? As I recall Joe Williams was a third round pick and he never even made it to the regular season. Mitch was a two time Ray Guy award winner I think so he certainly came with a bit of pedigree. This whole draft argument is such a silly one anyway, after the first two picks who really cares where a player is drafted. At the end of the day it only comes down to one thing, players who contribute and players who don't.
They wanted to improve their running back situation in 2017 so they drafted Williams in the 3rd and signed Breida as an UDFA one ended up making a contribution one didn't I can't see that it makes a difference how they ended up on the team. Of course people will say, well if we hadn't drafted player "x" in the 3rd round we could have had player "y". I seem to recall when Mitch was drafted there was all of the usual belly aching about him being taken in the 4th so I said fine, let any poster out there pick a player they like better right now who was available when Mitch was and we can follow his career and see who ends up contributing more to their respective teams. No one took me up on it because a lot of the posters in here like to b***h and moan about what "they would have done" but never offer any viable alternatives that they are willing to back up beyond a bunch of empty blather. And no, the option doesn't exist now to go back and cheery pick some guy who wasn't on anybody's radar but got picked in the later rounds and went on to outplay his draft position. That ship has already sailed.

Why draft a punter with trick kicks and then never use them?

Great! Let's trade up to 1st overall and draft the next AFL yabbo, because of some globe trotter tricks. Since it doesn't matter.

If the punter has to make the tackle, something is wrong with the coverage team.
