I think it would be a valid question to the play caller if they do not use some of the 4th rounders arsenal this season. He has had a few seasons to settle in, so unless there is some other issue I am sure the opportunity that will be low risk enough for a fake punt or three. It frustrates me to see that there is an expectation from some in the zone for him to just boom punts long because he is a 4th round pick. That should not have been the reason to get him. Pinion was ordinary but could have done as much.

umm that's why they drafted him - to boom long punts. I can't recall a time that Kyle dialed up some trickery on special teams. We've seen him call QB options, and had a WR throw a pass, but nothing on special teams - not even on the punt/kickoff return teams (lateral). Wishnovsky's ability to tackle really is a nice bonus as a last line of defense.

Wow. I am learning so much more about the mindset of leaders in this game every day. I think their scouting may have been a little off then. For the years he has been on the team he has hardly boomed anything until last pre season game. And it was the very game after which KS seemed to give Hightower an ear full and then trialing new punters. I really don't understand the approach to get this guy in the 4th. Plenty of guys on the street could have just boomed punts. Tackling is a rare commodity in punters for sure but that's like setting up to for a failure to cover on every punt. Not what I would have thought they consider critical enough for picking higher in the draft.

True if your play calling is not nuanced in this area. Wasted scouting/coaching/play calling and therefore wasted pick.

If he keeps booming 60 yarders and pinning teams inside the 10 he's worth a 4th because that's what the really good punters do. The tackling is a nice bonus. If they call fakes and he puts his rugby skills to use that's a bonus bonus.
Punting isn't just about kicking it far. It's how the ball is kicked. You can sky the punt so that it has longer hang time and forces the returner to fair catch it. You can angle it so that it goes for the corner by the pylon. You can put back spin on it so that it bounces inside the 5 and stays out of the endzone. You can kick it and have it land shorter with top spin on it so the returner let's it go and it gains extra yards on the ground.

I think in Mitch's first year he was able to get a few fumbled and some good inside 10 kicks. I guess we often don't know how the ball is moving in the air if it get's caught, I am yet to see him have a ball spin back more than once. And playing in a very good offense he rarely had to punt from the backfield or end zone until Mullens/Beathard time. It wasn't good and that's where you start looking at the play calling or Mitch's ability under pressure. Especially when there was the Long Snapper merry go round.

What really annoys is how Richard Hightower speaks about this area of the game. Lacking substance is being kind.

I am probably naive to think that the innovations that you see in College would filter through more. I suppose Kyle may be young but still a staunch traditionalist.

I have always respected your input in this forum and I thank you for it.

Not quite sure if Mitch played Rugby but the tackling in Aussie Rules can be similar and at the speed at which NFL moves. I almost wish sometimes the returner goes in his direction just to see them get creamed. His record stands though that no returner has scored on his watch.

You're finally coming around to why many say it was a wasted pick. Taking off those true blue colored glasses helping u see clearer.
All this b******t complaining over a punter. So funny that irony is lost on the whiners here wasting all this time complaining about a pick they complained the Niners wasted too much capital drafting. He isn't as worth the crying over as much as he wasn't worth the pick...

Did you miss 2015?

At least trying get away from the silly QB arguments.

I promise no crying until this one part of the game becomes critical to the SB winning chances.

We all should be excited about what this season could be. GO Niners.

LOL. I was wondering how long it would take you. It's nice to see you care. There are always Red White and Blue colored glasses which can be bought for the right price......as it should rightly be. At the end of the day we are all just 49er fans who want to see the team be awesome....and if an green and gold dude can contribute then a few of us may cheer a little harder.
Actually I'm happy for the Mexican guy to be part of the Niners Journey too. So many great stories are around if you dig deep enough.

He never played pro rugby in his life. Australian Rules Football is nothing like rugby at all.
AFL or Rugby Union or league are nothing alike.
I mean even Rugby Union and Rugby League are miles apart.

Having watched him I would say he played rugby league or AFL at school. Union tackling tends to be lower. His technique is to go higher

Typical "bump" used in AFL looks pretty close to his action? Not sure what they play in schools in Western Oz. Michael Dickson's front on high style indicates he may have played Rugby League in Sydney and that is the main sport in schools during the time he went through. I may have to fact check if he went to one of those Rugby Union schools though. Cameron Johnston made a good tackle while on the Eagles too but he is likely only an Aussie Rules player. Would like to see if former St Kilda player Sippa gets to tackle too now that he is the new Philly punter.

Dickson was on syd swans dev squad, just didn't get drafted to afl. Mitch played aussie rules football at club level until shoulder injuries forced him out.
Bust

man I wish shanahan knew how to draft. Like.... at all. Only time they get value is when a Bosa falls to them or when they get to the 5th round. A punter in the 4th? Bunch of ass clowns.
