He's plenty capable of staying in his lane and kicking but I've always wondered if this rugby style kicking would translate to the NFL.

Lol thank you

These fans live in a world where the only acceptable round for a pro bowl potential punter is the 7th. Need that 3rd string guard!! Lol

Pinion never made a Pro Bowl, so must choose higher than 5th round.

But, don't thank me yet. I'm okay with a punter, but I do wonder about the pattern of reaching.

Pinion got drafted in the 5th because he had a powerful leg, but that's all he had. He was average for most of his time here and wasn't trash, but it did frustrate people the way he outkicked his coverage or his inability to pin teams deep without it going into the endzone. The shanks also didn't help.

Wishnowsky seems like he has both an iron foot and can directional punt with the best of them. His athleticism is also helpful and hopefully Shanny green lights him to take off any time he sees the coverage team ignoring his ability to run by leaving a gaping hole for him to run through. Hekker only does it a handful of times each season, but coverage teams can't cheat because they know he's capable getting an easy first down. That's very valuable skill a punter can have.

Great points
Get over it people.

I hated the pick as well but at least he should be an instant starter and if he can be a pro bowl level punter then I'll take that over Joe Williams or numerous other 4th round picks who didn't do chit.

Lol I remember him running for a huge first down against Washington on like 4th and 17 and getting crazy excited and spiking the ball and getting a penalty. Whittingham was so pissed. If I remember correctly him being an Aussie he didn't know the rule.
If he is as good as advertised, and is top-3 in the league from day 1, it's worth it.

If we can consistently pin our opponents inside their own 10, with our revamped d-line.....watch out!
When this dude is flipping the field and pinning teams inside their own five week in and week out, this thread will be fun to revisit.

Lynch assured himself 2 starters in the draft.

The guy never played rugby in his life. He does not have a rugby kicking style at all.

You and I may have a different definition of "rugby style kicking" but as a guy who hasn't missed a Utah home game in 10+ years I can assure you he has a rugby style kick by college football standards.

He played Australian Rules Football which is 80% kicking and 20% running bouncing a ball on the ground a bit like basket ball. The kicking is all punting and relies on accuracy and touch. Long and short accurate kicking. Nothing like rugby at all that is mostly kicking to the sideline

Running to punt like you're about to run an RPO isn't going to work in the NFL. You'll be running right into the rush.

One of the issues with the Seattle kicker IIRC was that his delivery was long and he started getting kicks blocked and returned for TD's later in the year (twice against the Cards). Then he struggled because he had to speed up. Otherwise he was really really good up to that point.

I wonder if he'll have to make some big adjustments here???

This team needs to watch film on how the Patriots draft. These last 2 picks especially prove they don't know what they are doing.

......

That's super ironic, because the patriots traded up to draft the 2nd best punter the next round. Shanahan and Lynch said that they thought there was a significant gap between him and the 2nd best punter and they also had Greenlaw graded as a 4th rounder. Would you have felt better if the picks were switched?
