The guy never played rugby in his life. He does not have a rugby kicking style at all.

You and I may have a different definition of "rugby style kicking" but as a guy who hasn't missed a Utah home game in 10+ years I can assure you he has a rugby style kick by college football standards.

He played Australian Rules Football which is 80% kicking and 20% running bouncing a ball on the ground a bit like basket ball. The kicking is all punting and relies on accuracy and touch. Long and short accurate kicking. Nothing like rugby at all that is mostly kicking to the sideline

How quickly people forget that a huge reason during the harbaugh years especially 11' and why we were so good was having a really good punter pinning offenses deep and letting the d work from there. It's not sexy and it can be frustrating taking one in the 4th but having a really good punter is a weapon

When this dude is flipping the field and pinning teams inside their own five week in and week out, this thread will be fun to revisit.

And giving Ford, Buck, Bosa etc long fields to attack the opposition.

4th round pick sure, but I'm choosing to look at him as an extension of our D. If he's as good as suggested he'll be giving them a lot of extra field to go to work on and the more field position pressure we can put on the opposing QB the better.

Just need the O to hold up their end so we can add some scoreboard pressure too.

People undervalue the punter position in the NFL significantly . A great punter Vs a poor punter can be the difference of winning or losing a lot of close games. Just 10 yards difference in the starting position of the opposing offenses can be the difference of them getting 3 points vs having to punt the ball away. from scoring a touchdown vs having to settle for a field goal. You just cant see the direct impact they have they on the scoreboard. I promise you though they can be the difference in winning vs losing a lot of games over there careers. Yes, this was high to take a punter but if he turn out to be a great punter then it was more then worth a 4th rounder I promise you.

Agreed. Pinning a team inside the 5 with our Dline, means teams will, Run, Run, Run, Punt often.

Shows a lack of confidence in the offense to place such importance on punter.

It's another ploy to get more Aussie fans.

"There's offense, defense and uh... that other thing."

Yes. Good point. Nothing wrong with having a solid punter that gets the job done.
I don't have any issue with the player. (Darren Bennett played Aussie Rules Football and started in the NFL in his late 20's.)
I just wonder if he was the only punter available that the FO saw as a fit.

He doesn't kick rugby style from what I've seen. More of a hybrid AFL style.

Although the way he gets backspin on some of his kicks is more of a union/league style kick.

Overall though it's much more AFL than anything rugby. Probably just easier to call it rugby though as more people in the NFL world would be familiar with rugby than AFL.

The whole exchange was cool to watch and it's clear everyone in the room was genuinely stoked to get Mitch. Should do wonders for his confidence.
