lol wut

Yeah that sounds odd what I posted above. But a mid 4th punter has to be very good, not just 'a starter', not just 'solid'.

I think the issue is people are just being far too absolute. We don't live in a binary world. Yes, we all expect the top punter in the draft to be among the best at his position. Just like we expect Bosa to be among the top of his. Don't know how there can be a hard cutoff for good/bad though.

Yeah that's hard to define but we all know really what that means. He's a real weapon that truly helps swing games in our favor. A consistent play maker and talent wise alone, would be ranked in the top 5ish of the position group each year on ability alone. Production is consistent year to year.

That's also why we lead the league in sacks and QB hits; those intermediate routes take a bit longer to develop.

The goalposts will move my man. Don't worry about rebutting this stuff.

NC posted this in the special teams thread.

That onside kick recovery was pretty freaking amazing and our coaches really have to fully take advantage of this dudes unique skillset. You can catch a ton of teams sleeping until he begins to get a reputation around the league and teams have to start respecting his athleticism.

I said this yesterday but if he kicks like he did in college he will become a fan favorite. I see no reason why he shouldn't but you never know. I think we as fans just kind of got used to Pinion doing absolutely nothing and forgot how much of a luxury it is pinning teams back and making them earn a full 90+ yards.

Could not agree more, plus we all know that there are going to be some 3 and outs of our own and sometimes when we are deep in our own zone. Its a huge plus to have a punter who can switch the field.

We relied heavily on the run a ton last year d/t it being our only option outside of Kittle and esp. once JG and the receivers were injured. Goodwin early. I'd expect that to change going forward???

I remember back when we had Andy lee, he was great at reversing field position. He was a huge part of the success we had under harbaugh

Nice stats!

Football outsiders do a great job with their stats.

Well relying on the run is a key component of ball control.

The 9ers aren't gonna do the 17 play Harbaugh drives for sure. But they also won't go 3 and out 4 times a game and be abysmal on 3rd down with Jimmy.

Agreed. Once Kyle gets his offense going, while his run will always set up his pass, play action, his philosophy is still pass and the intermediate passing game in particular. I just wouldn't define that as a ball controlled philosophy and esp. not one mirroring a Bo Schembechler philosophy.

Yup, agree. I can see that also.
I like this kid...

but if it was TRUE that the Patriots wanted to give us extra picks for the spot so that they can DRAFT the same punter, then we made a DUMB mistake not to get the extra picks.

Not in the 4th. Belichick isn't dumb.

MAYBE he jumps up 21 spots ahead of us in the 5th like the Colts did thinking we'd take a S but I doubt it. And if so, trade a 6th to move up a few more spots to secure him.

The other issue is the PK Gray is going to give you far more value and we lost out on him. Gray will give you actual points. And Lynch was mad as hell losing out on him.

The spin to justify this move is just nuts.

Yet you justified Pinion in the fifth who was not considered the best punter in college. It seems ironic that you defended the previous GM for the exact same decisions this GM is making. FWIW, I don't think the selection of Punion or Wishnowsky were bad at the time in theory. It turned out that Pinion was a dud, and that Baalke tried to get too cute. We'll see if "Make A" Wishnowksy, and Lynch's decision to get him, fare better.

So you're saying that the Patriots would have made a DUMB move by giving us extra picks for this punter?
