I get that many see it that way, but Chauncey Gardner Johnson was one of the highest rated free safeties in the draft and he happened to fall. Maybe that's an indication he wasn't as good as people thought. But maybe not... second round rounders who people think could jump into the first end up slipping to the 4th all the time, just based on luck. And smart teams scoop them up. The Saints thought highly enough of him to trade up to get him right after we passed on him.
FS is an in incredibly important position in our D and also one where we have very little talent. I think CGJ would have been our most talented player at that position. And certainly would have been the highest rated prospect we've drafted at that position in a long time.
Punters can be, and usually are, picked up undrafted.
I would much rather have the best undrafted punter we could get and a potential starter at FS then what we have now: a top punting prospect and the same trash at safety that embarrassed our team all last year.
Most teams have punters they did not draft and they are fine. Having an average punter is nowhere near as bad for a team as having terrible secondary.
CGJ in the 4th was the last moment in the draft when we had an opportunity to draft a guy who legitimately could start this year at a position of need.
If you feel differently that's fine. But remember that name. Because he could be starting for the Saints soon. But you'll probably be happily watching our beautiful punts, getting us field game advantages that mean nothing because we are totally vulnerable to deep passes.
