The fact that he can tackle and run the ball on fakes or bad plays, makes him more valuable for ST's than most other punters.
I would imagine the ball spinning backwards would lose a little in pace and thus easier to clean catch whilst being hard to be 100% sure where it will land.
Haven't seen the video so can't really say for sure but it could have been a spiral bomb which is supposed to swirl awkwardly in the air and then swing late on the way down.
Otherwise it could have just been a punt with normal backspin. In Rugby/League kicks are attacking weapons so backspin if they land the ball into space will bounce awkwardly for the catcher. That's not as much an issue for a PR in NFL as the opposition can't run through and score off a kick.
