We've done a good job with LB talent evaluation in the draft. Even Reuben had the talent, it was the character issues that did him in.

My question is this—how much credit does the coaching staff get for how well we've drafted LBs? Saleh is a LB guy right? Would losing him potentially hurt?

I'm sure hes had some influence on whom we've drafted. So I would assume it'll potential hurt us.

What do you dislike about him?

He was picked too early , we passed up good interior Line prospects for a kid who wont ever play a down. We could have gotten him as a priority free agent. I like my linebackers to be able to HIT and thats one of his knocks

Going back and reading some unique responses when we drafted greenlaw.

So PFF has him on the All Rookie team

"He was one of the best linebackers in the league at limiting receiving production. Among linebackers who were targeted 50 or more times this year, only Darius Leonard, Jayon Brown and Eric Kendricks allowed a lower passer rating than Greenlaw's mark of 83.6"

what the 💩. I didn't know he was that good vs the pass. "Damn damn!"

You know we laugh and say how ridiculous this is now to evaluate so soon but come next draft this will all just repeat itself again.

I don't believe Saleh is going anywhere, at least not this year so hopefully they can get another diamond in the rough or two but I really believe that its a combined effort with a lot of bright people in the front office and the coaching staff.

You take a GM that is a former HOF caliber NFL safety, an assistant GM in Mayhew that was formerly a GM as well as a former NFL DB, a well regarded scout in Peters, a former star NFL LB in DeMeco Ryans and a guy who cut his teeth coaching LB's in Saleh and I believe that definitely gives you an advantage in evaluating the position.

This is why I think Saleh can potentially be a great coach. If he can spot Greenlaw kind of first round talent in the lower rounds, he'll be a fantastic coach and it will be painful to lose him.

However, I believe Greenlaw was a former safety, and i look at all the 'niner LB's as big coverage hybrid safeties vs run stuffing Patrick wills LB guys, then in my view, I credit Lynch more than any of the defensive staff in finding him.

Lost in all the discussion of "will Saleh go, will he stay" is the possibility that the team could lose DeMeco Ryans, the guy that has been directly coaching up these young LB's. I'm sure their success isn't lost on other teams that could try to lure him away. Not sure what his contract status is but the 49ers already declined interview requests for him from other teams last year.
I swear he looks like Frank Gore

Personally, just my view, but this defense (the Seifert/Carroll/Kocurek 4-3) has never been a linebacker-centric defense. Its always been about DLinemen and Dbacks. So if either Demeco or Saleh go, it would hurt less than losing Kocurek or Woods.
