Why not.

McGlinchey is being groomed to take over LT in the future. I agree that edge rushers come from both side but LT is the blind side for JG.

Maybe we should have drafted a career RT instead of a LT (Skule) for this type of situation.

Again, this has never been stated to my knowledge by Lynch or Shanny. It's just assumed by fans is all.
I think the positive from yesterday is that since we were ahead, it allowed Skule to gain some confidence by punishing people in the run game. That was his strength in the pre-season too. His consistency is the issue. He was a sixth rounder for a reason. He has flaws, but they're coachable, so we have to do what we can. He's got Staley to help him and they've got the early bye to get in extra prep.

Let's hope that helps enough.

That's why you are not coaching the team

Hoov says yes. The best OL athlete should always be at LT.

Shanahan already addressed this. Why change at two positions when you can change at one?

Elite edge rushers come from both sides these days. There's only downside in moving Glinch.
This!!

I get the worry of fans and the desire to move Glinch to LT. But I trust Shanny on this. It totally makes sense; changing one position is much easier and sensible than changing two positions, especially in-game.

I bet the thinking with Shanny & Co. is that we start Skule at LT against the Steelers, use Juszczyk and the RB's to help Skule out with chips, and if Skule still struggles use the bye to acclimate Glinch to the LT until Joe comes back, or get a vet LT off the street and keep Glinch at RT to focus on just replacing one position. Based on what Shanny said in the post-game presser I think that it'll be Skule at LT, or a vet off the street if he struggles.

Current OT FA I'd consider:
Sam Young, 32 (who we released during final roster cuts)
Matt Kalil, 30
Garry Gilliam, 28
Ryan Schraeder, 31
Jermey Parnell, 33

Personally, I say we stay place Skule at LT. We drafted him so I think think this is the best way for him to get some valuable experience and development. But I do think we should bring in a vet just in case he struggles. Of those I'd strongly consider Kalil and Gilliam to bring in, again, to play only in case Skule struggles.

IMHO
Shanny will scheme to help out Skule at LT... he will put a TE next to him, or a wing, use a back to chip, slide the protection to his side, limiting the number of times when he is BoB with an edge rusher.

Why would you draft a RT early in the first round with an aging LT if your intentions were not to move him to LT in the future?

i know the kids has to do the job himself and i saw our s**tty quarterback play back in the day when steve young was hurt and trying to coach the garbage we had out there.... but he does have a great coach in joe and assume they will bring in someone to provide some depth. just hope for the best i guess. .. i was not trying to say skule is garbage either. probably a poor comparison to the situation now and then when we thought having young on the sidelines coaching steve stensrud stenstron. whoever, was a positive

Because in today's game, there's virtually no difference from LT to RT and you need BOTH. They were hoping to avoid being in this scenario for two more years with the Staley extension...probably try for another Staley-like prospect in next years draft or at least, the one after that.

It sucks Coleman got hurt, because in our system, he was a good fit for what we do. Skule has the athletic ability but he gets caught holding in pass protection because he stops moving his feet. Footwork is very coachable. He lacks experience but I think practicing against our guys is another bonus towards helping him get prepared.

Adding a vet may be possible, but not sure the team feels there's anyone out there worth it. I tried to advise Sam Young is/was truly terrible and some people argued there would be no drop-off from him versus Coleman -- we see how that turned out. Got beat out by an AAF player and a 6th round rookie.

Bottom line: Skule very likely is the best option in the meantime. He'll make some rookie mistakes, but we just need to ride with it and have others step up. My guess is, if they don't add a street FA, they might just call up Pope from the PS for additional depth in the meantime.

jimmy gonna be dead soon if this dude is Staley's replacement. Shanahan better leave a TE to help him out on every pass play.
