This kid played so well today and really for the last few months. With all the injuries that Staley has dealt with this year, it's scary to think where we'd be if Skule hadn't stepped up the way he has!

Imagine thinking we need to take OL early in the draft.
We are set for years.

Is Skule playing better than Staley right now............seems to me that maybe Staley might have to sit when he comes back. He looked horrific against the Seacocks. His career is nearing its end.

Every 49er fan knows and respects the fantastic career of Joe Staley but at some point it may be time to hang it up.

I always thought it was interesting how they restructured his contract. I don't think it's a coincidence that if he should retire next year (or if they trade/release him), the team stands to gain ~$11M in cap space. He'll be 36 next year and with a younger, much cheaper (and seemingly just as effective if not more so) option in Skule, it might come down to a simple business decision.
They'll definitely need as much cap space as possible if they have any hope of keeping Armstead around AND extending DeFo/Kittle AND signing a veteran WR.

the need to keep those guys you said is more vital than a want to keep joe

And I love Staley for what he's done and what he's meant to this franchise through some really rough times, but I agree with you (and I suspect so would Bill Walsh if he were still around).
