Hard truths, making the necessary cuts in 2020 frees up ~$35M in cap space:

- Jerrick McKinnon: $6.5M in cap savings
- Joe Staley: $11M in cap savings
- Richard Sherman: $9M in cap savings
- Solomon Thomas: $4.3M in cap savings
- Marquise Goodwin: $4.5M in cap savings

The only one of the above that has delivered consistently on the field this year and the one person I would consider keeping around is Sherm, but he'll be 33 next year and on the last year of his deal, so again, his cap space might be more important than his on-field value.

Combine the $35M in proposed cap savings with the $13M rollover from 2019 and the projected $17M in 2020 space prior to any cuts, and we'd have ~$65M in cap space heading into 2020. That's more than enough to keep AA and extend DeFo and Kittle, and sign a top veteran WR. Alternatively, considering this upcoming WR draft is absolutely loaded, we might use our 1st round pick to address that need and consider signing a free agent CB as a long-term replacement for Sherm. For example, if Dallas' Byron Jones hits the market, he'd be a perfect fit alongside Witherspoon/Moseley on our defense.

I've been watching some clips of Skule yesterday. Man, that guy has some very quick feet. Jones got around him a couple of times but Skule slowed him down enough for Jimmy to get the ball out. Jones is on a record-setting pace for sacks so keeping him under control says a lot about Skule's play and potential.

Exactly, and the 1 sack that Jones got, he didn't get it against Skule. By design, Skule blocked down on the DT which left Jones 1:1 with Dwelly on kind of a delayed rush, and we all know how that ended up. And even then, it seemed more like a coverage sack than anything.

Sherm will be 32 next season.

I know lol. I'm just stunned how well he has played for a rook.

McKinnon will restructure, IMO
Joe isn't going anywhere unless he decides to retire
Sherman isn't going anywhere. Far too much value in the locker room.
Thomas is a trade candidate, IMO. Depends a lot on if they can bring back Armstead.
Goodwin is gonna be cut because they will be bringing in more WRs.

My mistake.

McKinnon will restructure, IMO - McKinnon will have missed the last 2 seasons. Even if he is healthy in 2020, why the need to bring him back?
Joe isn't going anywhere unless he decides to retire - If Joe struggles like he did against Seattle, that decision might be made for him.
Sherman isn't going anywhere. Far too much value in the locker room. - I thought the same once about guys like Ronnie Lott and Joe Montana, Ed Reed, Terrell Suggs, Brett Favre, etc., but this is a cruel business.
Thomas is a trade candidate, IMO. Depends a lot on if they can bring back Armstead. (see below)
Goodwin is gonna be cut because they will be bringing in more WRs. - Agreed

My point was, it's nearly impossible to bring back Armstead (not to mention, extend the guys mentioned AND sign a veteran starter) unless you make the hard choices. Teams can only keep expensive veterans around for so long, especially those on the wrong side of 30. It's an inconvenient fact, but a fact nonetheless that every player and every team is aware of.

It's no longer a "band of brothers" who stay loyal to each other no matter what, and it hasn't been this way in years (decades?). It's about signing your core, drafted guys and filling the rest of your roster with cheaper talent in an effort to maintain cap flexibility.

Final point: I fundamentally and emotionally agree with your comments about Staley and Sherm, FWIW. My disagreements are more practical than anything.

That's the challenge with a good soon to be great team. Walsh made those hard decisions. He always said, better to get rid of someone a year too early than a year too late. Personally, I would love to keep Armstead, sign Buckner and Kittle. We are deep at DL with some promising prospects so I can understand letting Armstead get away but I think he can get better yet. Bottom line we will need cap space.

PFF has him giving up 8 pressures I believe. It didn't seem like he had a bad game but maybe the film will tell us otherwise

Cutting Joe Staley after extending him in training camp would be ridiculous. Dude has played 3 games and the determination is he's done?

And to cut him to add a CB? Goodness no. 9ers need to spend their cap space in house keeping our guys. Jones is gonna be looking for 16 million. Hard pass.

You also don't cut Thomas you move him. Someone will give him a shot for 4 million.
This guy has been an absolute stud. JL And KS have been absolute dynamite in the later rounds of the draft. Thank God.

You need more than a 3 game sample to make that determination on Staley.

Worst thing this team can do is start cutting players to make FA splashes. They don't need to sign any big name FAs. Re up own guys and then make some moves to acquire more picks.
Didnt Skule have a bad game?

I've re watched the game 3 times he had a fantastic game. Having said that I still draft OL or DL in the first round every time. The trenches win super bowls period. Obviously there are exceptions to every rule. KS and JL know what's up...bring it haters.
