This was an excellent pick. Trust me, this is a dark-horse starter opposite of Sherman. He's perhaps the purest cover corner we have on the roster outside of Sherman.

Bookmark this post: don't be surprised to see him win the #2 job outright. I'm not predicting that he will, but if he stays healthy and plays to his skills don't be shocked to see him starting as the #2 CB.

A healthy Verrett is probably the purest cover corner on the team.

A healthy Verrett is probably the purest cover corner

I disagree. Plus, Verrett is just too frail to be counted on full-time. His smallish body won't hold up for this physical 4-3 LEO-style defense that demands CB's to tackle, and tackle often. Jason Verrett's frame isn't made for this style of defense, at least not on the outside. In the slot? More likely!. But K'Waun Williams will have a lot to say about that.

Understand this: Jason Verrett was a flyer. I get the impression that the coaches are gonna give Witherspoon every opportunity (as they should), and baring a total collapse on his part I don't see a frail Jason Verrett beating him (or Tim Harris) out as the #2 outside CB. I know fans here are all on the Verrett wagon but I don't see it happening.

Huh? Verrett has never been a poor tackler and you notice how I said "if heathy". Also you said best pure cover corner, where did you say best tackle corner?

Every defense requires a CB to tackle, not just ours....You can't say he's too fragile then in the same breathe talk up Harris who's a 6th yr college player because he was always injured. Size clearly doesn't mean anything if you're looking at Harris(regarding ability to stay healthy) . Verrett has some of the best feet in the NFL (when healthy) and has film to back it up.

Saying we took a flyer on Verrett and not saying we took a flyer on our last pick in the draft (198th pick) is silly. IF Verrett is healthy he's probably the best pure COVER CB on the team.

I don't think I accused Verrett of being a poor tackler. My issue is his durability, and in defensive schemes that demands physicality from its CB's tackling would be an issue for smallish, frail CBs like Verrett, not that he can't tackle, but that his body simply won't hold up to the tackling he'll be asked to do. His career has shown that he can't hold up, thus he should NOT be count on. The only thing we can count on is that Verrett WILL NOT be available for most of the season. His body simply won't be able to hold up. This defense is built around the front 4, with the secondary playing more man. So the back-end don't need to be full of Primetimes. But with more man coverage demands more tackling of its CB's. That put Verrett in more danger of getting injured.

Had an eye-opening East-West Shrine game. So as of late Tim Harris has shown on recent video some durability that allowed for his cover skill to shine through. He seems to have figured something out and has learned how to stay available.

2014 Verrett had labrum and rotator cuff tears in his left shoulder, which limited him to just six games in his rookie season.
2016 A partial tear of his ACL in his knee ended his third season, which last all of four games.
2017 his knee acted up again in week 1, and he was put right on to injured reserve not long after that.
2018 a torn Achilles for Verrett.

On the other hand Verrett seriously contemplated retirement due to his propensity to be injured (and likely would have had Lynch not taken that flyer). So in my mind Verrett is far more of a flyer than Tim Harris. There's no way that Verrett should be in the starter discussion. What good are the skills if he hasn't shown any ability to stay on the field?

First off, I have no idea what you're talking about in regards to this scheme demanding better tackling CBs, at least any more than any other scheme? that's simply not true and Jonnydel just talked about it in Verrett's thread.

both are flyers ONE has elite pro-bowler upside and is a former 1st rd pick...the other way the last pick in the 6th rd. My money is on Verrett playing more than Harris this yr.

it's nonsense to say he's not...without a doubt health is a massive issue BUT his ability to play CB at a high level (when healthy) isn't a question.

Lol torn ACLs and torn Achilles are a result of tackling learning new s**t today.

Honestly, and I haven't really commented on Harris, but anyone who knows Sherman, like Harris has since age 15, is a good pick IMO, could have been higher had not been for injuries, but people need to realize injuries are apart of the game, no one ever comes out of the game unscathed.

Hopefully it works out and Shetman can take this guy under his wing. Maybe he can be a gem. Hopefully he stays healthy and can be a better Corner than Moore was last year at least. Then Moore goes to Fs and we got depth all around.

I kinda agree with both points. I think Verrett is our best corner outside of Sherman but I could easily see Tim Harris starting the most games next year. It would be nice if Harris could have a good season because he is the best tackling corner on the team IMO.
