good.. celek is crap. there is a reason the team has picked up extra tight ends and it sure as hell is not to give george competition for the starting job. many of us said we needed a better second tight end than what we had last year. this theory that we were "fine" because celek is fine and juice can be used as a tight end as well obviously did not hold water with kyle, i think its been said the guy is huge so it would appear. little guys breaking ankles is not longer the game plan.. thank god
Not crap. Overall he's played well for us and he has the respect of other players, including Jimmy G.
Increased competition, however is always welcome.

This is a Shanahan pick up.
Probably
BUT - JL & KS do NOT work in separate worlds.
I'd give great odds that Every pick is a combined effort.

He palyed well for a brief period and his time, IMO, is done.

Nice proven replacement for Celek. Better blocker and catcher, Kyle's gonna set up a couple playcalls so the opposing team thinks the 2nd TE is just gonna block like usual but then sneaks out and only has to box out the nearest defender for a TD.
The Redzone offense now has these toys:
-Kittle is going to draw coverage and will wreck house as a blocker,
-We got two slant guys... one who when healthy had a 100% slant completion rate his rookie season, and a rookie that was the best slant guy in college... both tough willing blockers.
-RB's that can catch and run, including the FB
-A 6'5 rookie with strong hands and the aggression to go up for jumpballs, and willing blocker.... or RB when the mini-me RB's cant punch it in.
-And now a 6'8 premium blocking TE that can make the catches he needs to when called upon
In terms of options and personnel, Kyle can counter any group the defense puts out there. We go 21 personnel, they go heavy... that leaves at least 2 (3 if Hurd is on the field) options at least 6'5 one 6'8 that will have single coverage if flexed out. Not to mention fast RB's that LB's will have to read anticipate the play presnap to have a chance at catching them on a swing pass. The red zone offense will have a completely different feel this year with some luck in the health department.

Nothing is guaranteed, especially when ROSS DWELLEY holds down the #3 spot.

Sure we can do better, and we should always strive for that. A player can get supplanted by a better player, but that doesn't mean he's necessarily crap. Celek hasn't been crap, IMO.
Cheers.

13 personnel (1rb/3te/1wr) was something Kyle liked to use in ATL to give the defense a look they rarely practiced against, but he hasn't done much of it in SF. So many moves this offseason has been about personnel flexibility, adding Coleman, multi dimensional Hurd, the search to upgrade TE2.

With Jacob Tamme, Levine Toilolo and rookie Austin Hooper, offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan has three good players at his disposal. While one might think that this formation is best suited to help in the running game, Atlanta has primarily used it in the passing game this season.
