Its all about expectations. Prior to TC there where a number of articles and posts about how dedicated and awesome he looked working out with DP. I agree, its only been two days of padded practice, but when you hear about Bosa's amazing Staley beating hips and Big Buck rag dolling people, I was hoping to hear some real positives about Thomas regarding 7 on 7s and 11 on 11s. I don't care a whole lot for 1 vs 1s. Honestly, if he really had potential, we should be hearing about him tossing 3rd string oline scrubs and putting pressure on CJ TheLard.
That's not his game...his game is quickness, not strength. Just because he's not putting up Aaron Donald like results in team drills(not sure how much you're expecting from a DT in 7 on 7 drills lol) doesn't mean he's not improved.
There were blurbs about Thomas looking pretty good with Buckner. Just like in games though if someone else wins your job may not be as flashy.
If he's doing well in 1 on 1s those are a little more indicative for defensive linemen than DBs. It's still about technique.
And expectations should be tampered with every player in camp. You want to hear the best possible but it's a long process. There hasn't been any bad reports regarding Sully...or really any DL so that's a positive in its own.
I'm confident if Sully keeps improving when he sees the field with guys like Bosa, Buckner and Ford around him...he'll do some good things.
Heck look at it this way, even Grant Cohn had Sully listed on his "good" list from practice 1 and didn't find a way to put him on his bad list in the other practices(if he could he would, you know this)
