Here's a deeper dive into the type of sacks by the Trench Warfare experts. No doubt Bosa will be climbing up this list but that's good news for Drake to start. Hargrave and Arden Key are on there too.

All of them are underperforming. It's obvious they need help. Wilks do something.
Nice contribution by Gregory.

With all of the attention given to the O-line, I'm thinking, what does the D-line need?

1) Run stuffing nose tackle type. I'm looking for the next DJ Jones. Hargrave and AA are amazing. Kinlaw is having a really good year. I expect Kinlaw to be gone next year if he earns a big contract, so there will be room on our defense for a monster space eater.

2) Speed rusher. Yes we traded for Randy Gregory, but I will not assume that him being here next year is a given. We want that edge rusher opposite of Bosa and it would be ideal if said player was inexpensive. We have Drake Jackson, we now have Randy Gregory , and I am curious about Robert Beal, though I doubt he sees the field much unless he REALLY impresses in practice.

3) Defensive end that is comfortable playing inside and outside. Strong run defender that can give us some good pass rush snaps whether on the inside or outside.

I think it's a given we draft the first player and third players, because even if we do get Kinlaw another year, that 5th year would be a gift, and if he has two good seasons under his belt (or even just continues on his current trajectory with this season), he can earn starting pay elsewhere, netting us a day 3 pick. The third player will be necessary for depth.

I think option two depends on what happens with Gregory, Jackson, and Beal going forward. The best part about this is that we do not have to use a 1st or 2nd to address any of these needs and still get a quality player.

It seems like the DL has become so oversaturated d/t the league overdrafting them, there are always DL available in FA and trades...and cheaper too. My guess is they'll continue to recycle their usual team building strategy here esp. because they already have young players there still developing.

And I agree with your needs here. We could use an immovable hog inside at 1T and some 3-cone electricity on the outside "with a plan."

Definitely. Strong running teams will punish us. That's been evident since we lost DJ Jones. I'm optimistic because our holes are few and our picks are many. Just need to be wise with the drafting. Particularly on day 1 and 2.

This is because Wilks isn't a complete DC. His specialty is the secondary. When it comes to the trenches he's below average and it showed today.

Ive been giving him the benefit of the doubt but he seems to have yet to play front to back- let the front 7 get after it and play guys tight. Maybe fear of the big play? The quarterback will get smashed so much though that it shouldn't be that big of a deal.

The defense has played well overall, top 5, but it's underperformed given the personnel. Six games in. He knows what he has by now.

Going to be interesting to see how he responds between now and the bye. The offense did little but we should've been able to win the game on D by ourselves.

Guys played tight the majority of the game versus the Cowboys. The off coverage is a issue. As far the d line goes these guys are underperforming. AA and Bosa have been extremely quiet. And Ferril and Jackson haven't provided much. Hargrave has played well.
I don't really understand why the front four cant get pressure consistently without blitzing. Same personnel save the DE opposite Bosa and that was addressed via the Gregory trade. Hargrave in the middle is a huge upgrade and yet they still fail to generate pressure often and have to do stunts and loops

They swarm as well as any game we have seen in he Shanahan era the previous game. Last week people were apologizing and giving Wilks credit for his team's performance. After an unfortunate loss, they will lose some more as well, people are back talking about how pitiful of a DC Steve is. Well let's give the other team credit as they played their ass off and hit the best of the 49ers today. The Browns are a good team and have by far the best defense in the NFL. If they had a consistent mid tier offense, the team would be a real serious threat to win a SB. No AFC team wants to see the Browns in the playoffs if they make it in.

Wilks is a good DC that will be in this role with the 49ers for years to come. We need to settle in and get to use to it. He will maintain a top 5-10 defense for at least the next few years which is good enough for any team that has SB level goals.

The bottom line is we aren't as good as we though we were. Cowboys found out last week, Eagles and 49ers found out this weekend. He NFL is tough and on any given Sunday you can get beat.

The pitiful is too harsh. But I guess maybe a little more aggressiveness given the personnel? idk. I thinjk ultimately this defense will finish top 5, but it just seems like something missing, in spite of pretty much holding all opponents, including the Browns to low point totals. I'm curious as to where we rank in terms of yardage. I haven't seen that this year.
