Before the season started people were saying that the Niners D line was the best or second best in the league. At this point I'm not sure they're even top 10. They're not getting the pressure or sacks that we expected but they're also giving up too many yards on the ground. Is it the changes that Wilks brought in?

They're getting the pressures they're just not finishing.

Good point..we need a dj jones

Nah, swing for the fences and get Derrick Brown if not, maybe just try and get DJ Reader, Austin John or DaQuan Jones!!!! 49ers need a better run stopper in the middle. WTF happen to Kalia Davis who was suppose to be the next DJ Jones?? lol

Davis is more of a Givens and Hargrave type. He's not a run stuffer dj jones type. Looks like the FO didn't think about having to stop the run when building this d line

I've settled on DJ Reader, too bad the 9ers play Cincy next. After the 9ers kick the s**t outta them, trade for DJ Reader!!!! lol

So they aren't getting the job done. Pressures are fine but sacks are way better. Yardage loss. The chance of a QB fumble. The way they fire up the defense and home crowd. Good QBs can throw under pressure. They can't throw when they're on the ground.

49ers desperately need to stop the run cause because the defense is getting worn out!!
Forcing punts after a 3 and out of maybe one first down has been a staple of thus team fro years. Setting up the offense in good field position has allowed them to succeed even without a great QB. Those short drives made it so much easier to get in FG range of score a TD. Less chance of turning the ball over or committing a penalty that sets the team back. No question that the defense isa key to the Niners offense.
Wilks came in this off-season and told the dline: "ok fellas, we're going to take everything that's been working, and throw it out the window!"

My all-time 21st century 49er defensive 11:

Justin Smith
Deforest Buckner
Bryant Young
Nick Bosa

Julian Peterson
Patrick Willis
Fred Warner

Not so clear cut with the secondary...

Richard Sherman
Charvarius Ward
Jimmie Ward
Talanoa Hufanga

For me it seems there is almost always an easy answer for the QB to get the ball out quick, especially in 2 of the 3 games we've played against good quarterbacks.

Of course we aren't getting sacks when the ball is out at first opportunity consistently.

We need to find a way through coverage to get the QB to hold on to the ball a beat or a few beats more than what we've seen. Disguise coverages. Stop blitzing and leaving huge holes in the defense that are easy completions for competent QBs.

I would add Michael Carter at NT before his foot issues ended his career. Carter was a monster in the middle.

Goldson over Ward any day of the week.

Aldons 2012 season can bump Bosa off

Some numbers i just seen reading ESPN article Good read

https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/38736100/49ers-high-priced-defensive-line-struggling-untracked

The Niners have a sack rate of 4.9%, which ranks 26th in the NFL and on pace to be the lowest of the Shanahan era. For context, the 2019 team was at 8%.

  • San Francisco has 15 sacks, which is tied for 18th in the NFL. It's on pace for 36, which would be its third fewest since 2017.

  • The 49ers' pressure rate of 27.6%, which 22nd in the NFL and on pace to also be the lowest since Shanahan and Lynch arrived.

But it's also fair to point out that Wilks has, on multiple occasions this season, been forced to lean into an aggressive approach because the front four isn't getting home consistently.

When the Niners don't blitz, they have a pressure rate of 23.5%, which is 23rd in the NFL. When they do, it's 40.5%, which ranks 18th. Perhaps Wilks is feeling out the best ways to deploy his blitz packages or how to use certain players, but the fact that the Niners aren't even in the top half of the league in pressure percentage -- let alone sacks -- with and without the blitz indicates that one of their foundational pillars is showing some cracks.

To be sure, opposing offenses are game-planning ways to try to neutralize the Niners' star-studded line. The ball is often coming out quick, which explains the significant gap in the Niners' pass rush win rate (eighth-best) and their pressure rate (22nd), and teams are sending extra blockers at Hargrave, Armstead and Bosa with regularity.

This is the part that is frustrating. Its easy to to predict where to send those blockers. HALP

So they're winning they're pass rushes at a 50% clip but aren't getting pressure because the QBs are getting rid of the ball at an extremely high rate?

that sounds like scheme issue or secondary problem? No?
