I just don't understand how Wilks loves the 9-wide but it seems GB and any other team's big plays are on the outside, rarely between the tackles. 49ers have been gashed on screens, wide sweep all season long. The wide 9 hasn't resulted in any more sacks for the speed rushers in Bosa or Chase.

I actually think the secondary in zone has been good this year but the outside runs and bubble screens have gutted this defense.

DL was fine. Watch the game. Jordan Love prevented so many sacks by getting the ball out.

Your title of SME has now been rescinded by NC

Hard to watch the game sometimes. Easier to wait to be told what you saw by others.

I am interested in what you think is contributing the run defense problems. Personnel? Scheme?

On defense:

The only issue I had in the pass game were the penalties.

In the run game, it was the terrible setting of the edge. I don't know if we need to put someone else outside like Kinlaw, Givens, or bring in someone like Hyder or Jordan Willis, but we gotta get that fixed.

Phoenix said this was how he operated previously defensively when running things. Middle was always wide open. He'd have to break it down,
Seemed like the front 7 would rush 4 and drop everyone else into coverage, the rb would go to the gap exposed by coverage or the gap player would get blocked. Ran right into the gaps so many times it seemed

We don't have the personnel in a scheme that stresses the hell out of those two interior in the wide 9. I've been saying this since the offseason. When the 49ers play their base defense with a combination of Armstead, Hargraves, Kinlaw or Givens, they're quite literally playing a base defense with 2 interior DL that are natural 3 techniques in a style of defense that is already inherently difficult to defend up the middle.

Simply put, the 49ers never replaced DJ Jones. It's imperative that the 49ers add BEEF this offseason to the interior DL. The good thing is it shouldn't require more than a day-3 pick(they should draft 2 IDL IMO).

I agree with this last year we had Ridgeway who was at least 365 and low to the ground. Kinlaw is big but that higher center of gravity is easier to move between steps.

Hargrave is disappointing me. He has similar stats to DBuck but he's disappeared on the stat sheet.
Just posted on this topic in SF vs GB thread and didn't see this one. Rewatched the game and all I can say is WOW. Wonder is the entire DL unit went into a separate room before the game to smoke weed for an hour? That was one of the worst performances by any unit all year. Didn't hear Armstead and Graves name mentioned all night. EMBARRASSING.

But they didn't have jones last year in the W9 and was nothing like we are seeing this year in terms of gaping holes. I think part of it is no real beef inside coupled with Wilks and how he runs the D, something just looks off compared to years past
300 Mil for this woah.

This is why I like promoting in house rather than outsourcing. The transition from Saleh to Ryan's was nothing like this.
