Really, that is how bad it got. Besides you cannot lose a Bosa and have any semblance of the previous SB yr. plus Dee was in what ...a couple parts of games all yr? As it turned out we finished the yr by limping across the line. A lot of DTs that never would have seen the gridiron got to play.

That is NOT where we start from this yr. We are basically back to 4 starters, (only one true DE, Nick), and 4,5 or 6 rotational guys. Kin got an education last yr and the strength of the guy alone is cause for celebration. Last yr he looked lost at times, kind of like Arik before he "got it" . That's what i see in Kin this yr but am anxious to see who we get in draft, edge-wise.

We have a huge edge in seeing guys on PS or not even on the team who have actual playing time in the bigs. There is no way that is not going to help us this yr making up our DL.

No guesses yet re: DL until we see what FA and draft do for us. A trade? Nah. But draft will be fascinating in that we need CB, S,, C , OG, both starters and an OL to put into training. So DL will get its guy but there will be serious discussion before the first two days are over. But we do have the stats and film on those guys from nowhere who got a shot at the big time....and who knows, we may just have one or two from there that work out.

I think we have a good solid foundation for the DLine. in 2017 all we had were Buckner and Armstead and pretty much nobody else. Remember Cassius Marsh? Now we have Kinlaw, Armstead, Hyder (hopefully), and Bosa. I'm hoping they add another Hyder 2.0 or Elvis Dumervil 2.0 in the draft. We shall see.

It sucks to see it back. 😭

I had to bump it after Bosa posted that image of the 2019 DL with the caption, "I miss these guys."

We do too, Nick. We do too.

Post script to note above. Whether we move way up for a QB is still hanging out there in the wind. Rosen in college was a fine QB, but in the pros, not so much. The old saying , all it takes to ruin a good college QB is a shiddy pro coach. And that very well could have been Rosen's case.
Remains to be seen. All kyle needs is a guy with talent that he can work with.

But if JL/kyle/Peters think he may be a kid who could be Kyle's guy, then we won't be in the QB draft market , giving us a shot at a higher pick for DE/OG/S/CB/ OL trainee. But if we move up, to get a POTENTIAL NFL QB, then we have a lot less chance getting our DE/OG/S etc.

i have zero knowledge of how Rosen is valued, particularly by Kyle. But if he could go Gaga over Cuzins, i guess he could do same over Rosen given a couple yrs of coaching up. Meantime jimmy gets better, healthier. Obviously I would like to know how the triumvirate feels about QB, but as Giedi said in earlier post, FA will show us a lot. If we nail down Mack, then if we move up my hope would be Slater...in that he already is listed as NFL ready (PFF) at OG, and can play LT later on. By my count there are at least 20+ teams in market for a starting OG and having Slater last til #12 would be sheer luck.

If we go QB, then , no, no Slater and we would have lost other early rd trades so no DE til later either. Man i hope that scenario doesn't play out. Basically this looks like a fight over Lawrence, period. The other QBs just don't seem to be a good risk/reward value...for us, anyway. Getting Rosen last yr was a lot more clever than i had thot. KS/JL were already thinking draft way back then.

It must be the thrill of a lifetime to be the ones picking in draft, but wow, the pressure? No thanks. So we are still a month and a half out, and will just have to hurry up and wait. Supposedly the smart guys in draft arent' real high on DEs, so oddly that may work to our advantage. At least there won't be a gaggle of guys fighting for the #2 pick to get a DE. That's some solace, i guess.

It is starting to look like IF...IF we go for one of top 4-5 QBs, then any hope of starting OG, DE, S or CB are out the window. It is either that POTENTIAL
QB (excluding Lawrence) OR good shots at starting OG/DE/S/CB and we got lots of ammo to move up with after pick #12.

It can't be both. With Peters there and John L we have a better chance of playing the cards we have now at up and coming QB .That top 4 or 5 QB as our pick would be a huge blow to OL, DL, and DBs. Just got to count on our guys to do the right thing.

It definitely needs to be bumped after losing Ford, Buckner and Bosa coupled with a half time rookie 3T.

Totally agree that free agency is the key to a good draft. I think Rosen was a good step ahead of everybody in terms of free agency. ShanaLynch got him before the season was over and got to see him in practice at least.

If ShanaLynch gets some good solid free agents (maybe Mack and resign Hyder for example) they can go BPA in the draft and not worry so much about need. That will give the team some draft flexibility to *maybe* overdraft certain positions like QB or Pass rush to get strategic depth to confront the 49er injury hex.
True dat.

SNAP INTO A SLIM JIM, BROTHER!

Base
NB---DJ---JK---AA
If they resign Hyder NB---DJ/JK---AA/JK---KH
Pass Rush
NB---JK---AA---SE/DF
NB---KG---JK---AA
SE---KG---AA---DF

So many possibilities if we resign Hyder and Ford actually contributes.

i doubt that AA plays any DE outside of our base defense.

hopefully we get Hyder back, and Ford can stay somewhat healthy, and we have Samson now who will get some playing time there as well. also expecting us to draft another ER.

priority #1 on the DL is keep AA the hell away from the DE position on passing downs.

Nice post man... I don't think we can count on Ford at all and Hyder is still a FA. That being stated, if Bosa is even 90% of what he was and DJ, AA, and Kinlaw are healthy all season, this DL will be damn good. Plus, the Niners have some talent (albiet somewhat undeveloped still) in Street, Daniels, and Givens on their roster. With Ebukam added to the mix, that group to me, looks very promising. Tim Ryan absolutely loved what he saw from K Givens last year. With a year under his belt with the Niner coaches, he could really contribute this season.

Cheers!
