So it was the offensive line's alignment that determined who played 2i and who played 3t.
I am only referring to run/pass neutral downs. On obvious passing downs, the 49ers will often play with two 3techs.

It's only been one game so I'll see if this continues or if it was gameplan specific. So versus PIT, the 49ers were always in an Over front. Ryans last season switched it up throughout the course of a game, sometimes using an Under front (3t to the weakside, 2i to the strongside). Why is this noteworthy? The 2i is the guy that often faces the double team block.
Great points THL!

I"ll just add that the last two minutes of the first half, Wilks didn't call many DLine stunts, but in the fourth Qtr, he started calling them and the 49ers got a couple of sacks from it. Looks like Wilks is still getting a feel for the Wide 9. I think the over and under fronts are from the old Saleh/Caroll alignments - whereas the dual 3tech is more akin to the basic alignment of the Wide 9 itself - as how DT's are aligned. I still don't like the Wide 9 in stopping runs as a base defense, but that's not why the 49ers run it though.

The wide9 truest form is with a 2i and a 3t. Base four man fronts will either be Over or Under. Two 3t are for pass rush downs. The way Wilks played them always in and Over front might be because they saw something with PIT's tendencies.

No tactic is without its drawbacks and in a passing league the 49ers are opting to lean towards being good at pass rushing, at the sacrifice of run D. But if the 2i can keep either Warner or Greenlaw clean of blockers, the run D will be fine.
Stafford was getting the ball out VERY fast which impacted sacks.
They better FEAST against Daniel Jones.

Giants right side of OLine is horrendous. Jones can run. We need to watch out for that.

Everything was quick. Can't expect the d line to get a sack in less than 2.5 seconds. Too soft in coverage.

Dline was gassed alot this game. I hope the Giants dont go on long drives this Thursday or else we be fudged.
Armstead making 17, Hargrave making 20, bosa getting 34. I kind of feel like we should be getting more production considering these dudes sucking up almost all the defensive money outside of warner.

Deebo seems to think the niners have the best defense by far but I'm not sure.

Secondary seems incapable of playing anything but soft zone. Pass rush is good but not dominating enough to cover it...

they don't have Stafford nor Barkley

I know, but its a short week and the Giants are coming off that comeback win high so I'm sure they're going to be energized and want to make a statement.
They aren't there yet, i think a few more weeks and they will settle in. Rams got the ball out so fast. They adjusted well in the second half. I would like to see more wins by everyone else because almost every play they doubled Bosa, but nobody really made them pay for it.

That's exactly how they beat us in the 4Q in the NFCCG. It looks like they just said, "Eff it. Let's just do that the entire game this time."
