Wide 9 defensive line???

Shop Find 49ers gear online
After rewatching the game I couldn't really tell but it didn't look like the defense ran a wide 9 defense.

It looked more like the defense was in a balanced set on the Dline (tackles played 2 technique ends played 4 technique).

I could be wrong if so please advise me on what I missed or misunderstood, thanks!

Thanks for the replay. Probably a bit of wide 9. I bet we see more when Bosa and ford are in

Without a doubt we'll see plenty when Bosa and Ford are in.
Just look at the ends. If they are lined up wide of the T and/or TE, that's W9.

You probably didn't notice it because the ends weren't WAY wide like you'd see with Bosa + Ford in obvious pass rush sets (see thl's All 22 thread). But it was W9 the whole game from what I remember (don't quote me on that) in base and nickel.

Watch for it against Denver. Keep in mind the personnel and down and distance too. We didn't have Ford or Bosa last game...our pure edge rushers. We had the fat boys like Street playing DE so that is "probably" why they were pinched inside just a shade outside the T and TE and not really wide. At 300 pounds he's not a speed rusher and wouldn't benefit from the extra space.

This is not wide 9. Check the strongside DE and how he's aligned over the TE. This is an Over front and situationally it makes sense to not be in a wide 9 because this is 3rd and short.

This is wide 9. The strongside DE is outside of the TE. It's hard for me to be sure without the endzone view, but the biggest tell is the strongside DE and whether or not he's head up with the TE.

And that's the point I'm making. From what I saw it looked like the pass rush was doing very well. It seemed as if every drop back the dline was in the Dallas QB's face.

Not to mention the way efficient way the LB's were stacked behind the line allowed for them to play down hill and be very effective against the run while maintaining good coverage concepts.

I know it's very early but I'm a firm believer in going with what works regardless of what one has obtained what they believe fixes a problem

If the balance of the 2 and 4 technique continues no matter if they use bigger DE's or 4 DT's for all I care continue to use it.

Also, if you guys notice this defense formation looked very similar to a Stack 4-4 defense which I think can be very effective in today's league...

Yes sir!

It just look like from that first screenshot where they are not in the wide 9 appear to generate more pressure on a consistent basis

Not sure if it's the alignment or the personnel that made a difference we'll see going forward
Well

At least this aspect of the game is working well lol
