Surprise Cut & Surprise Keep

In this thread we play game in which everyone picks one surprise cut and one surprise player who the 9ers keep on the 53.

If you're right about a cut or keep but it doesn't go against conventional wisdom for who will be cut or kept you are wrong. (example: saying Kendrick Bourne is a surprise cut or surprise keep isn't that interesting because none of us are really sure about if they'll keep Bourne or Matthews).

Also try to not have your surprise cut and surprise keep be related to each other (i.e. they'll surprisingly keep this person because they've surprisingly cut that other person).

SURPRISE KEEP: Adrian Colbert (everyone assumes Colbert will be cut mostly because they haven't seen him because he has been injured, but he's a great ST player who can also provide positional versatility across FS and SS (which they really value), unlike, say, Marcel Harris).

SURPRISE CUT: CJ Beathard. (Kyle is lying about keeping three QBs in order to drum up trade interest, but nobody is going to trade for him because he sucks. By Saturday at 4PM CJ Beathard will be going through waivers)

Beathard huh?... I can see him as a second string sign for some team other than the 49ers. However, if it allows McKinnin to be on an eight week IR stint... may be worth the move.

Yep. Although TBF I'm skirting my own rules a little bit with Beathard, just because I think probably an equal number of people think he'll be kept and think he'll be traded.

Beathard as a surprise cut only works because both kept and traded have to be wrong for cut to be right.

Surprise Cut:
Josh Garnett: maybe not much of a surprise since he doesn't practice, but thought he'd be given more of a chance since he was a 1st rounder

Surprise Keep:
Dontae Johnson: veteran with no upside which is why it'd be a surprise if he made the 53.

considering the fact he's made the team 7 straight years, it would be in my mind.

Wouldn't this be better qualified with "Most Desired"... Ward would fit there too.

Ugh I hate all those surprise keeps above.

There's no way the 49ers are cutting Marcel Harris. He's going to be starting by mid-season. In fact, given the way he played at the end of last season I'm surprised he's not the starter already.

Joshua Garnett? Yes. Surprise cut. Marquise Goodwin? Yes. Surprise cut.
