Ya but sometimes players are just dumb. See Kwame Harris.
The refs seem to call more penalties early in the season because there is always an emphasis on new rules and they are trying to get the message across to the players. The players can take a few games to learn the new rules so we see a lot of calls that we hopefully won't see by mid season. Plus you have the new emphasis on targeting which requires players to learn how to tackle a different way.

This is true and I'm hoping that's all week 1 was a reflection of. I saw a star that penalties, especially holding, we're up 30% so far this year.

I really wish the NFL would pull back on penalties. Now it seems like the majority of big plays are negated by some obscure penalty or a minor infraction that had no impact on the result.

yep. no impact on the result should negate the penalty.

I agree with this with most penalties but for bad calls.

This week we still lost 75 yards on 9 penalties.

Witherspoon's one was just dumb but if there were more consequences from the coaching staff for doing stupid stuff like he did perhaps he would think twice.

What things could be consequences?

Being forced to wear a pink helmet and jersey during practice? A fine? Extra physical training? What would work to instil more discipline to stop this leakage from penalties?
