Rating 49er players: UPDATE - 11TH GAME

When a team is undefeated, it means just about everybody is playing well.

I say "just about" because there are some that are not quite like the rest. WRs fall into that category. All five are in the lower average range. Bourne is the highest rated at 65. Of course, with the exception of Goodwin, all share the same common denominator - young and inexperienced. More reps should help that but it is what it is right now. duh

Linebacker ratings took a hit in this last game, primarily due to missed tackles and assignments in the first drive. After that possession, the front four took over and the LBs had fewer chances to offsets those early mistakes.

The interior OL was not good against the Rams. This was Tomlinson's worst game of the season. True, they faced outstanding competition but they will have to deal with that in the playoffs. Person struggled at times as did Richburg. Surprising considering the two kids on the outside played so well. I thought it would be the other way around with the kids struggling as the Rams focused on them instead of the middle. Wade Phillips getting old and forgetful?

On the positive side, Jimmy continues to play solid overall. His overall rating of 71 puts him in the #15 slot PFF and #13 QB rating at NFL.com.

Mostert (#16) and Brieda (#6) continue awesome play. I hate referring to them as UDFA, even though they are. So far, they are the best RB twosome in the league. Period.

Much has already been said in his thread but Brunskill was the best OL in the game. While it is fair to say part of it was scheme, the fact is, his 76 rating for that game was quality football.

The front four need a good nickname. just saying... They are amazing.

Ford 91 - Elite
Armstead - 90 Elite
Bosa - 84 - high quality. Influencing nearly every play but not getting the numbers
Blair - 84 -
Thomas - 64 - After a poor first game, he has been steadily moving up. Take away that first game and he is well "above average."

When a front four is doing their job a secondary is looking good...and they are. All four CBs are in the mid-to-upper 70s. All in the top 20 in the league! Though it has only been two games, Ward rates at 83, 7th best safety in the league. Tartt continues solid play.

Coaching also deserves a great deal of credit. The work that Woods and Kocurek have done with the secondary and DL respectively, is obvious on the field. Props to them. Also, major props to Cool Hand Kyle and Saleh for getting things straightened out after that first LA drive. Reading the reports of Kyle telling Saleh to "be patient and get it fixed" reminded me of something Bill Walsh talked about in one of his books. Walsh said that a critical attribute of a HC in a game was to be calm when things started to go haywire. Kyle has been listening.

I know this thread does not get a lot of comments, and that is OK. It is largely just raw data, however, being able to look at the numbers, along with the eye test, gives a lot better understanding of what is going on down on the field. One can never have too much information.

So .

Can you post the run blocking grades for the WRs? I think Deebo has done a good job with this and was wondering how PFF grades it.

You're right. He has been very good. If he is out of the Redskins game, the run game will be more difficult.

Deebo - 85 awesome
Bourne - 68
Pettis - 64
Goodwin - 57
James - 30

Holy carp I agree with a pff subjective grade. He's pretty damn tenacious as a run blocker.

OK. Now you set me off looking at the individual numbers. Seeing the differences in categories helps to see why certain players are used when and how they are used. For the most part, I think the numbers are helpful, however, they do not account for scheme differences that impact the ratings of players. (see LBs and ID)

So...

Halfback - Run - Receiving - Pass blocking
Brieda - 85 - 60 - 31
Mostert- 70 - 75 - 63
Coleman - 66 - 59 - 86 *limited snaps
Wilson - 66 - 54 - 76 * " "

Fulback - Run block - P block - Run - Rec
OW Juice - 81 - 83 - 63 - 71

WRs - Rec - Run - Run block
Deebo 63 - 59 - 85
Goodwin - 62 - 63 - 57
Pettis - 60 - 63 - 57
Bourne - 65 ---- 68
James - 59 ---- 30

TEs - Rec - R block - P block
Kittle 93 - 73 - 69
Toilolo - 66 - 62 - 72
Dwelley - 47 - 48 - 55

Tackle - P block - R block
Staley - 87 - 63
McG - 70 - 56
Skule - 51 - 70
Brunskill - 82 - 70 *limited snaps

Guard - P block - R block
Tomlinson - 70 - 53
Person - 58 - 63

Center
Richburg - 72 - 54

Corners - Cov - Run def
Sherman - 76 - 54
Spoon - 79 - 72
Wiliams - 81 - 64
Moseley - 72 - 67

Safety - Cov - Run def
Tartt - 63 - 69
Moore - 55 - 68
Ward - 73 - 82 *limite snaps

LB - Run - coverage
Warner - 39 - 67
Alexander - 48 - 80
Greenlaw - 61 - 64
Ratings here do not reflect the overall value of 49er LBs as the scheme dictates their primary value as speed guys who cover and chase, not run stuffers. They are light, speed guys, not bulky run stuffers. Run stuffing is handled by the biggies up front.

Interior D - Run D - Pass rush
Buckner - 58 - 74 This is another place where the numbers do not reflect full value.
Jones - 52 - 56
Day - 70 51
Taylor - 36 - 77 *limited snaps

Edge - Pass rush - run D
Ford - 90 - 63
AA - 70 - 91
Bosa - 83 - 73
Blair - 77 - 72
Thomas - 65 - 60

New numbers after the Carolina game. LBs took a hit due to McCaffrey's running. OGs continue to be up and down, down in this past game. Everyone else stayed pretty much the same.

Appreciate the work
New numbers are up in the OP.

As would be expected when a team is winning, the ratings are generally very good. The DL leads the team (duh), WR brings up the rear. OG play is settling down the list a bit after a good first 7 games. Some specific notable ratings:

Jimmy Garoppolo is now the #14 ranked QB by PFF. #11 by NFL ratings, and he is less than 1% point out of #7 overall. (pay no attention to that man behind the curtains)

Dre Greenlaw is the highest-rated LB, #17 overall. It is still a relatively small sample but the kid has delivered.

Fred Warner, after some low run grades early, has come on strong in the past three games. Like Weston Richburg, though the ratings are not stellar, his value is so good in getting people in the correct place that the low run ratings are not an issue, especially since they are on the rise.

Jimmy Ward is showing why Saleh and Shanahan had faith in him. He is now the #4 ranked safety overall. 8 spots higher than ET III, and less expensive.

4 49ers are ranked within the top 18 among CBs. Thanks to Joe Woods and the DL.

Though WRs continue to be the lowest-ranked group, Deebo and Bourne have moved up the list quite a ways. Sanders continues to lead the way at #15.

OL play has been much discussed in that thread. Though Brunskill gets a * for limited snap counts, that is bogus, IMO. He now has played 312 snaps and his ratings have stayed high for every game. He is #11 overall. Guard play has dropped off in the past three games, albeit some of it could be attributed to changes at OT and lack of chemistry. Richburg's numbers have improved some though still not top 10. His greatest value is his experience in making the blocking calls. When he has been out, it really shows.

10-1, baby!
