Championship window.

The championship window opened up wider than a porn actresses......wide open. With the 20 or so million we will save next year (and possibly this year if we trade him) we can extend all of our own and attack free agency.
The best possible position you can be in as an NFL team is to have a loaded roster and franchise QB on a rookie deal.

9ers are set up for that. All they have to do is not screw up this pick.
Niners just opened up their championship window for another 5 years min. Having a QB on a rookie contract and they could just load up their roster. Aslong as the QB is not a bust.

I think the QB needs to be more than just "not a bust." They gave up three first round picks. The QB needs to elevate the team in order to open their championship window.

My fear is that they take Mac Jones, and he ends up just being a younger Jimmy G with a less strong arm. That's probably good enough for the 9ers to stay good. But I don't think that's going to be enough to beat Mahomes. Or the other phenom QBs out there.

He has a much stronger arm than Jimmy. He throws a good deep ball. Something that fans believe Jimmy can't do. The reason Mac Jones is looked down at when compared to the others is he doesn't move around as well as they do. But there is nothing wrong with his arm.

I'm of the opinion even if you have Jimmy with his 25+ million cap hit for the next decade, as long as you draft and trade well, your super bowl window will always be open. Its when you don't- like seadderall or the rams- is when your window shuts down.

Average NFL career is just over 3 years, if you don't renew your teams talent every 3 years, its over in 3 years (assuming you win the super bowl in year 1- or are in it like us in 2019).

All of this

Agreed. But thing is, even if the QB IS a bust, we still have Jimmy on the roster through next year. Worst-case scenario is that after one year, we realize that our Rookie QB isn't developing as he should, we still have the option of rolling with Jimmy in 2022.

And in 2023, we can choose to extend Jimmy, or use that money to load up talent around the young QB... Or, if that young QB is a Ryan Leaf-level bust, we swallow our pride, move on from him, and find a free agent QB.

It's definitely going to hurt A LOT if this rookie QB doesn't work out, but we have a strong core right now and are proven to manage the cap extremely well. We have the ability to make moves if things don't work out the way we wanted it to. We won't be in a hole like the Falcons are--negative/minimal cap space, with a large portion of their money tied up to an aged Matt Ryan and Julio Jones.
We got free shutters and there's a hurricane coming, lol.

I"m betting the QB isn't a bust. Kyle drafted Cousins when Kyle was 33. He's learned (I hope) a ton more about coaching offense and the QB position since then specifically, so that whoever he drafts isn't going to bust. Key for a guy like Mac (if he's picked at #3) to succeed, Kyle's going to deal with his mobility issues by having a very strong run game, which is Kyle's genius at. So that shouldn't be too much of a problem for Kyle.

Kyle won't pick him. We will have a guy that can hit passes at ever level, make plays when one isn't there, and be able to keep the chains moving if the running game is shut down.
