Garoppolo had no time and wasn't sharp to begin with, and almost exclusively throwing to our most obvious target only helps the other team--ignoring this because of his own hubris is a big reason why we lost. At the same time, I am pretty sure Saleh is off most of those coaching "short lists" he was supposedly on after the last few weeks; He hasn't shown much of anything in terms of innovation or ability to adjust. I honestly think he has looked good because we upgraded personnel to the point where we could execute hi scheme to begin with. Once people figured out how to attack it he has had zero ability to make adjustments, and he ignores obvious weaknesses like the fact that Julio Jones was killing us by himself. How you don't rotate extra coverage his way is utterly baffling. He is by far their best player--Saleh almost deserves to be fired for that alone. I think this loss also exposes the weakness of the wide 9 when your interior linemen are getting manhandled like ours was--we obviously sorely miss DJ in the middle, and the only pressure we got was from Bosa out wide (who still had to fight his way back inside to make a play because Ryan ALWAYS had a place to step up into to avoid him). The next two games are must win now, and based on this game and the defense's struggles I am not too sure we will win them. Wild card at 11-5 is still a big improvement from last year and I will take it, but considering how things have unfolded with injuries and coaching missteps I can't help but feel a little bit let down. Lets hope Shanny and Saleh can figure stuff out and that the players act like pros and come out prepared--no dropped balls, dropped INTs, missed tackles, broken coverages, turnovers or stupid penalties.....

Holy wall of text Batman.

Despite what many fanboys are trying to say to minimize this loss...

This loss absolutely has a massive impact. It's not just about winning the division. It's about winning the #1 seed. Now the Niners HAVE to beat LA to lock up the #1.

Moreover, the double bye possibility is now not an option.

Winning the division IS NOT good enough for this team. The Niners absolutely need a bye.
The west is lost, we won't beat Seattle. Rams D line is going to slap our O line around all day long.

Rest the players, take the wild card, and hope for a miracle series of road wins in the playoffs.

Hello Mr Optimist.

At least he didn't say "book it" . . .
Time to accept it now, Niners have a playoff gauntlet on the road. They earned it yesterday.

I don't think it's definitely lost, and I think we can throttle LA, but I do just see us having a tough time beating Seattle in a game that matters. Only one player is left from the Harbaugh days, but that's when the baggage started, and I think the mental/human nature/choke issue is real. I do feel better about the game with healthy Sanders and Kittle and getting some of the players on D back.

Even if we win both games and get the 1 seed, we may see them again in the playoffs, and in Levis where they've already beaten us. The demons of the 2013 NFCCG will never be fully exorcised until we beat Seattle in the postseason and then win a title.

I was thinking this last night. If any team is built to win on the road its SF.

The last line is the important one here. This team can win it all now. We are going to lose key players as early as this offseason, like Armstead. Our draft picks will be a first, two fifths, a sixth, and two sevenths as of right now. Long-term, the Buckner and Kittle deals will chew up cap space. What do you do about Ward? Sherman? Witherspoon? End up cutting Ford to make some other deals happen?

If we don't do this now, it may never happen in this "era."

With Seattle winning yesterday we were gonna have to win the last 2 games anyways. Yesterday's loss doesn't mean anything

Therefore, in this specific scenario where both teams finish 12-4 after SF loses to Rams, SEA beats Cardinals, and SF beats SEA the division winner will come down to which group of teams of WAS-NO-GB (SF) vs. ATL-PHI-MIN (SEA) has the higher combined winning %.
Not really a great situation for San Francisco to be in.

That basically means we want to be rooting for Green Bay and New Orleans to boost our strength of victory.. but on the other hand, we're competing against them for a first round bye in the playoffs. Catch-22.

They have to win against the Rams.

The only reason yesterday's loss matters is because Seattle can now essentially treat next week's game as a Bye Week. They can rest injured guys. It doesn't matter if they lose. Conversely, if we had won yesterday we could have arguably treated the Rams game like a Bye Week but because we play on Saturday and Seattle plays Sunday I doubt the 49ers would have treated the game as such since a win and a Seahawks loss would have clinched the division.

Even if we had won yesterday we still were gonna have to win the last 2 to win the division and get the #1 seed
