GOING INTO THE SHOTGUN FORMATION NOTHING NEW TO 49ER FANS

WE GODDAMN INVENTED IT IN 1957!

Some clown said the players weren't very big or fast in 1953.

BOB ST.CLAIR - OT - 6'9", 263 lbs. Ate raw meat.

LEO NOMELLINI - OT, DT - 6'3" 270 - Ex-marine, WWA wrestling champion - First 49er ever drafted. - Played in 10 Pro Bowls. Never missed a game due to injury in 13 seasons.

CHARLIE POWELL - 6'3", 226 Greatest athlete to play for 49ers. Signed at 19, ten (10) sacks in his first game. Knocked out the #2 heavyweight in the world and fought Floyd Patterson and Muhammad Ali. In high school, Charley ran the 100 yard dash in 9.6, just .3 off the world record at the time.

CLAY MATTHEWS - 6'3" - 220 The present-day Clay Matthews' grandfather. A tough nut...

Here's a fact for you youngsters. You are way wrong about the size, speed and athletic ability of those since the 1950s. For instance, nobody would believe that the average height of NBA centers in the 1950's is just as big or bigger than current day NBA centers. HERE'S A LITTLE TRUTH FOR THOSE WILLING TO SEE IT...CENTERS OF THE 1950s NBA

Those helmets were soft af. Today's helmets are hard af.

That's like comparing grampies limp biscuit to one on Viagra

In what twisted world would anyone try to compare those two things

I didn't know the Clay Matthews' part.

I think I've seen still photos of that. It's interesting that it was Charlie Powell that was involved there. Makes me wonder if it was a racial thing since Powell was the only black player on the team then. This was an era when most teams had very few black players so I wouldn't be surprised if there was some racial element to it.

Charlie Powell was far from the only black player in 1953. Our backfield had John Henry Johnson and Joe Perry and it had absolutely nothing to do with race...

I was going off a team photo. Joe Perry was on the team in1953. John henry didn't join until 1954. So there were 2 black players in 1953. This was not uncommon then. There were still many colleges that had no black players. Don't forget the first black baseball player wasn't until 1947. Times have changed for the better.

1953? Was anyone on these forums even born yet(apparently there are which I find very hard to believe)? Lame

Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it.

Voile!

Where have you been? There's a lot of us that remember the old days at Kezar. I didn't start following the Niners until 1955 ( I was 8) and most games weren't on TV then. We didn't have ESPN and sports shows virtually 24 hours a day. You had to get your news thru a thing strangely called a newspaper. No smart phones to tweet our friends with or instagram to send pictures. Newspapers and radio. That was pretty much it. I hope this history lesson was helpful to you and I hope you make it to jr. high next year.

Just having fun. As an old timer I know when someone is poking fun when they say I can't believe there's anyone old enough to remember 1953 on this forum. It's all okay and not mean. Just giving him a little needling back.

And weren't those leather helmets back then? I'm sure they wouldn't cause as much damage as helmets today.

No, leather helmets were a thing of the past in the 50s. They were hard plastic but not nearly as shock-absorbing as today.

The 49ers signed their first black player, BOB MIKE of UCLA in 1947, and added JOE PERRY in 1948, as well as the first Japanese player, WALLY YONAMINE, in 1948. Unfortunately, the Bob Mike story does not leave the 49ers in a very good light. In the last season of the old AAFC (1949), there were 12 black players in the league. The NFL had five. The 49ers had actually played two black players in 1948 and 1949, Joe Perry and Bob Mike, a linebacker from UCLA, who played there along with his good friend, Jackie Robinson. When Mike joined the 49ers he played left and right tackle both on offense and defense for two years, and played very well.

In July of 1950 the NFL and AAFC merged and the 49ers were interested in expanding their scouting to include the deep South and the East. They made news by appointing Bob Mike as their first black scout to search the country for good black players. Then suddenly in September, he was released! Nobody knew why and the 49ers and owner Tony Morabito were silent.

Finally, Bob was interviewed by a black journalist. He told the story of why and how he had been fired. It seems that he had brought a lady friend to practice and after practice he greeted her. She was a light-skinned black woman whom owner Morabito thought was white. Morabito immediately released him. When Bob Mike discovered why he had been released (he had had no idea and was mystified), he brought his lady friend with him to Morabito's office for a sit down. He showed Morabito that his light-skinned lady friend was actually a black woman. Morabito was so embarrassed and defensive that the result was a screaming match that nearly resulted in fisticuffs and left the rift between the two wider than when they met. Bob Mike left the meeting furious to never return.

Then, the 49ers made a public statement covering up their actions. Thankfully, we have come a long way since that unfortunate incident.

They should cut him in Cleveland.

I would be the first to sign him after reinstatement.

Rudolph kicked him in the nuts and tried to take his helmet off first. Garret just lost it. He's been a model citizen since drafted, so after he gets dropped we should volunteer to help rehabilitate him.

This

Zero games for Rudolph is a joke.

Why is this bad? Steelers fans are already punished for having him start another game.
