The way to contain Jackson is the same way we controlled Rodgers: The pass rush must be coordinated and not get pushed around to the side/back of Jackson. The SNF crew did a good job of illustrating this on one of their clips of Bosa. On the snap, he pushed hard straight up the field and then flattened out to move in on Rodgers. The DTs then have to stay in their lanes and not allow Jackson to slip out the front.
Jackson has not faced the kind of balanced pressure he will see from Bosa and friends. Gonna be fun to watch. Gonna be even more fun to listen to how the national heads talk about the results.

Pass rush is least effective when they're running the ball. Seems like a very obvious statement, but it cannot be emphasized enough.
the problem isn't really containing Jackson, it's containing their overall run game on the option, not the times when things break down and he just takes off. Thats the difference between what BAL runs and what seattle or GB do with their quarterbacks. I'm not as worried what Lamar can do passing the ball or on off-script scrambles, I'm very worried what this designed run game can do.

Kaepernick looked good passing because he didn't have to make difficult reads, he'd see a receiver get open and throw it as hard as he could in a line drive with little to no arc. The NY Giants and Ravens seemed to have figured out Kaepernick, and both teams had outstanding defensive fronts at the time. The Packers and Falcons did not, and got gashed by Kaepernick's big runs.
I'm not sure which of the Raven's 2019 opponents we can compare ourselves to, but if we are only rushing 3 or 4 linemen and getting pressure, I think we'll have more discipline than teams that blitz consistently. Armstead, DJ Jones and Buckner will be key to keeping rushes up the middle contained. But Fred Warner, Greenlaw and the safeties will need to lock down the edges, which will be much easier said than done. I'm not sure how good the Rams secondary is, but surely we won't have as many blown assignments as the Rams did tonight.
I think rather than our defense, I think our offense is key to victory. Jimmy and Company have to play keep away and keep that ball away from Lamar and that run offense. I think it's too hard to shut down the Baltimore offense, I'd settle for slowing them down. If we can get an early lead, they'll have to start passing which is Baltimore's weak spot on offense (so says the stat machine). If our defense can't slow down the Baltimore offense, it's going to be another Seadderall Seachicken game where - whoever the last one to score, wins the game.
Oh yeah, I definitely think that's a big part of the overall strategy in keeping the ball on long drives, converting 3rd downs to run up the time of possession. That's how we've beat hot teams in the past. Gotta keep high scoring offenses on the sideline. That's what we did to win the second Arizona game. Jimmy kept converting 3rd downs and drove the ball with very little time left for a game winning score. Getting Kittle back is a huge boost to our offense's ability to convert 3rd downs and extend drives. If there are more threats down field, that can also open up running lanes. Hopefully Sanders gets healthier and Deebo continues to improve down the stretch, so that we have all three levels: short, medium and deep threats so that defenses can't stack the line against the run.
Is Baltimore's defense weaker on passing even with Earl Thomas and Marcus Peters? Let's face it, the Rams are no longer the rushing threat they were with a healthy Gurley. So I don't think we have any idea how our running game will do with the Ravens. I think Kittle, Sanders and Deebo can be effective, along with Coleman underneath. It's going to be crucial to establish the run, and hopefully with Juice and Kittle back sans rust, we'll be able to bring back the smash mouth running game from earlier in the season. Combining that with Jimmy's recent passing performances, and we'll be difficult to stop.

Gonna be a tough game.
I'm not sure who the rain is going to help or hurt but this is going to be the toughest game of the season.

I don't know, I'm not sure it is.. I'd rather it be a clean game.
Just them running forward no matter what with both Lamar and Ingraham.... both whole break arm tackles and are slippery already + rain... I don't know if I like that.
I'm going to watch the Redskins game again to see how our offense was, but I don't remember it performing great in that weather.
We need to call our own misdirection plays this time... using Deebo like we did early in the season. I don't want to rely on our WRs catching passes in bad weather, or relying on Jimmy's arm strength.
The Redskins game was a f**king monsoon with the s**tty field getting pounded with rain for 2 days before too. I'd rather it be clear weather too but even if it rains I don't expect the same condition they had in Washington

It's going to hurt a passing team more.

We should know most of the nuances of Roman's offense and should have plenty of tape of it lying around the facility since he was our OC and ran the same scheme here. Granted he does have better players running that scheme now, I think because of our familiarity with it and our talent on defense we should be able to nullify all their advantage.

This is going to be a low scoring game - both teams will run the ball, with minimal passing, with it raining.

I agree, I think that offense is so good at running the ball and ball hogging with time of possession that I think their defensive stats are inflated. I think that Ball Controll offense masks some significant defensive deficiencies. Earlier in the season they had problems pass covering and to a certain extent they got Marcus Peters and Earl Thomas, to bolster that DB backfield and hence the front seven have more time to get to the QB. They have only 23 sacks to our 44, so they have possible pass rush deficiencies, and where they make up for it is in defensive back coverage and I think because of the defensive back coverage is much better than before - they blitz more. So our offense - if they can run on Baltimore's defense, and loosen up their run defense by passing to Kittle, Deebo and Saunders - our defense can strangle them if we get a lead. They remind me a bit of Air Coryell without the Air. In other words, very conservative ball control run offense, a decent defense - but that offense masks a lot of defensive deficiencies that I think Kyle can expose with his offensive genius. One weakness is possibly an inability to pressure the QB, and they have to resort to blitzes to generate QB pressure.
I think if Baltimore blitzes Jimmy, I hope he can make Baltimore pay for that. On defense, I hope our offense makes them drive the length of the football field with lots of 3rd down conversions. The longer it takes Baltimore's offense to score, it creates possiblities of stalling them and our offense can overtake their offense, in a sense, and our defense to start to constrict that offense for the win.

Normally I wouldn't care if we win or lose this game, AFC team. Lets go in gain some knowledge and prepare for a rematch in the SB if we lose. The problem is we CANT afford to lose. Seattle is right on our tail with an easier schedule. Our team while extremely talented on multiple fronts is built out of glass. We can't afford a week 17 battle in the trenches. It's already going to be extremely difficult making it to the playoffs as a complete team in general with how injury prone we are.
Our injuries are so bad, we re-signed a guy to replace someone who's injured (blair) and within 2 games blair's replacement suffers a BROKEN ARM ending his season on the spot. On a game where we thought we actually came out with little to no injuries.
I still have nightmares from Bowman being carted off the field and having food thrown at him, I really don't want to relive that experience again. I don't think I slept for like 2 days.

Is there any rule against posting stuff from other fan sites? Some old timer just posted how the patriots (or any other team for that matter) can beat the ravens. The ravens are running stuff from a long time ago. This is from patfanken over at patsfans.com:
What you are seeing from the Ravens isn't anything new at all. In fact it is very VERY old. The Ravens offense is just a rehashed version of the old single wing offense that was all the rage in the 20's, 30's, and 4o's, and didn't become dated until the early 50's when the wing-T formation. Back when I coached, there was still ONE team in the area that ran the wing T into the late 70's. North Quincy HS still ran it, and it was a tough thing to stop since you only saw it once a year. And as the DC it was my job to stop it.

Well blame that injury on Eric Reid.

I just had to post this because my dad said what the ravens run looks like something his high school team ran in the late 50's.
Also from patfanken:
a. In its base form you'd have 3 backs in the backfield, 2 TE's. With a direct snap to a QB who was both the primary runner and passer. With all kinds of backfield movement and counter off it, you generally could create numbers advantages to one side or another. You could also run options off of it, and almost EVERY pass comes off a play action pass. The Ravens do the same thing only using a TE and RB, and sometimes 2 TE to go along with Jackson in the backfield.
b. I recall that we determined that looking into the backfield was a fools errand, though reading the line proved to be a solid key. So that would be my first thing. Break down what they are doing and come up with some line keys that give the LB's their first direction.
