Also from patfanken:

a. In its base form you'd have 3 backs in the backfield, 2 TE's. With a direct snap to a QB who was both the primary runner and passer. With all kinds of backfield movement and counter off it, you generally could create numbers advantages to one side or another. You could also run options off of it, and almost EVERY pass comes off a play action pass. The Ravens do the same thing only using a TE and RB, and sometimes 2 TE to go along with Jackson in the backfield.

b. I recall that we determined that looking into the backfield was a fools errand, though reading the line proved to be a solid key. So that would be my first thing. Break down what they are doing and come up with some line keys that give the LB's their first direction.

good stuff! I'd love to know if he said anything more on how to counter it....

How many times has the edge defender gone after the RB in the zone scheme? Why does nobody just go for the QB and blow his ass up? He's a sitting duck while deciding to handoff or keep. And if I remember correctly the NFL has said the QB is essentially a RB in the zone read; blow Lamar up... land on him. Let's see how long they run that.

Also Lamar is no Russell Wilson or Kyler Murray. He's either a pocket passer or a RB, he doesn't run around and buy time to throw. They roll him out some times, but there aren't any unscripted plays or scramble drills.

Absolutely. Dline just has to throw his line back in his face. I wouldn't want him long term. He's going to get killed or his legs broken trying to run it like that. Very hard to stop for sure but..........

Still not afraid of him passing it. If he can get it to his guys, so be it. I trust our guys on islands, just don't want to see him gash us with his legs. I still don't think Lamar throws it that well, some people compare it to Kap.

I agree insofar as the arm strength is there but you don't see much touch and the mechanics are a bit wonky so I don't think he's a great thrower while on the move. However, his lateral movement is so much better and he can escape the pocket much more easily than Kap who was a great straight line runner but not nearly as agile. If he starts moving back there our defenders have to sell out that he's running it.

They were talking about it on Fox radio. Jackson is a "running QB" not a " QB who runs" which I believe is true.
I hope our DEs smack Lamar EVERY zone read he does. Dont chase the RB. Smack Lamar.

Just like these same Ravens did to Kaep after they changed the rules about hitting these mobile QBs running the zone read.
If belicheck can't stop that offense, it'll be super tough for us.

So happy Mahomes, Watson, and Jackson, and New England are in the AFC.... let them weed themselves out before we meet them in the SB!

My heart says 31-17 niners
My head says 34-27 ravens

With that being the case we need to try some wild s**t defensively. Lynch needs to text with Belechik and swap ideas. Haha
Doing a little research on the Pats/Ravens game.

What stands out is TOP. Ravens had 37 min vs Pats 22 min.

Pats only ran the ball 17 times whereas the Ravens ran 41 times.

The game was virtually tied until the Ravens pulled away in the 4th quarter to win.

Pats only had 1 sack. Not sure how many hurries or QB hits.

Bottom line is we have to run the ball and keep LJ off the field as much as possible.

Key is to keep our defense fresh.

I hate to say it, are we about to not just lose but to get blown out by the Ravens?

The Ravens have now blown out just about everyone including:

Seahawks - 16-30
Patriots - 20-37
Texans - 7-41
Rams - 6-45

Then, you add to the fact that we can't defend against mobile QBs? Doesn't exactly bode well, does it?

We need to recommit to running the ball in general. And we need Deebo, Sanders and Kittle on their A game to beat the man to man Baltimore runs.

Going off our performance in the rain vs a worst redskins defense.
