SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS vs BALTIMORE RAVENS - Week 13 PREGAME

I'm worried about our offense moving the ball against their D. They have top end CB and FS. This allows them to play downhill against the run and attacking the QB.

JG will need to make tight throws and our WRs will need to run tough routes and fight to get open.

we need AA to launch himself into jackson like he did rodgers. i love when players do that. great great effort
Lamar Jackson brings a unique skill set to the game and Greg Roman has built the offense around those skills to take full advantage of them. The problem with that is what do you do when he gets hurt and he will get hurt with all those carries. Who else on the team could run that offense like that? When you run as much as he does it's only a matter of time before he pulls a hammie or sprains his ankle or tears up his knee. It happened to Vick and it happened to RG3. People forget how good RG3 was in college. He had the same skill set as Lamar. He was a hurdles champ and could really run. Bang. Tears up hid knee and that was that. Jackson runs like a running back and the average NFL career for them is 4 years or less. When he's running in the open field and twisting and turning he really leaves himself open. Don't forget, it's not like he's been doing this for years. It's only been half a season.

I guess what I'm getting at is if we lose Jimmy we know that Mullens can come in and do a decent job for a few games. What do they do if Lamar gets hurt? Who else do they have that runs like that. It would completely change their offense.

Granted he does have better players running that scheme now, I think because of our familiarity with it and our talent on defense we should be able to nullify all their advantage.

eh, the scheme they are running there is a good bit different than the HaRo Schembechler stuff.

I understand wanting to win every week. But purely from a significance standpoint -- this would be the game to drop if the Niners were to lose one.

The Atlanta game means more than Baltimore.

Right on! We get that front going and he's going to have to think a little more, which results in errors. Like I said earlier, they haven't faced a front like this!

Exactly. This offense is tailored to Jackson's skills. They run way more pistol than Roman did when he was our OC.

what roman did for us and what he is doing now means nothing for this game.,

I was so nervous that the Packers would get a bogus "spearing" or "leading with the helmet" call on that play.

After every sack on Rodgers, I'm like... "any [bogus] flags? Nope! LETSS GOOOO!!!"

first off. unlike what the packers did as the game went on and what the rams did last night.. we have to give a good effort play hard and never give up. i do not think that is a issue with this team. but there are no moral victories

The NFL is so fickle. I forgot the Browns beat the Ravens earlier this season.

I just had to post this because my dad said what the ravens run looks like something his high school team ran in the late 50's.

Also from patfanken:

a. In its base form you'd have 3 backs in the backfield, 2 TE's. With a direct snap to a QB who was both the primary runner and passer. With all kinds of backfield movement and counter off it, you generally could create numbers advantages to one side or another. You could also run options off of it, and almost EVERY pass comes off a play action pass. The Ravens do the same thing only using a TE and RB, and sometimes 2 TE to go along with Jackson in the backfield.

b. I recall that we determined that looking into the backfield was a fools errand, though reading the line proved to be a solid key. So that would be my first thing. Break down what they are doing and come up with some line keys that give the LB's their first direction.

good stuff! I'd love to know if he said anything more on how to counter it....

I would think the Pats bring in outside consulting on how to beat this.

I still think hit the QB over and over is the best remedy to beat it.

I appreciate your optimism but this is a whoooole nother' monster we're facing here.

The thing is that the Ravens offensive scheme (like the 49ers) is able to dictate what they want the defense to do. While I'm amazed at the play above, the Ravens place themselves in ideal circumstances where defense can't really pin their ears back and just rush Lamar.
