When you're the better team, there's no excuses. See our previous Superbowl loss. We can come up with every tiny single excuse but in the end, at home, in December, you beat inferior teams IF you want to be a contender. You learn how to close out those games. There's no excuse FOR THIS ONE.

Trap games happen all the time. I think you are way overthinking this loss to the Falcons. Our past super bowl winning teams would lay an egg a game a season and get blown out. At least this game came down to the last second. We didn't show up and played with no urgency coming off that huge Saints W. It took a last second TD from a team playing like it was their super bowl to barely win this game by 1. Oh, and the ball was inches away from not crossing the line and it being a Niner victory. I am not concerned about this Niner team at all.

Bingo. So why do we need to make excuses? They just didn't have a good game all around. They certainly were the better team and they played down and got burned. Simple. No excuses. And any player and coach will tell you that. They wanted to keep playing because they know they dropped the ball...literally. It happens. But the contenders win those games even on a down day and that's concerning.

Right, it's not an excuse. We played half ass and still almost won. First time all year this team has played half ass. I'm sure this will be a humbling loss for the team, and it'll light a fire under their ass. This is why I'm not concerned playing against the Rams and Seahawks.

Yup, it's just the reality of the NFL. Dude's get hurt and the talent level goes down at some point. Our depth has been counted upon more than you'd like and for the most part has played well. FWIW I'm not hating on NC or anything...just saying it's not an excuse at all.

The falcons have a quality offense and our defense full of backups held them to 17 pts with 1:48 to go in the 4th QR. I do think Kyle could have gotten more creative to get some points on the board (like vs the saints) towards the end of the game. That fumble at the end of the 3rd was a backbreaker. They would have at least gotten 3 there.

I really think Kyle was trying to just get the W vs ATL without throwing out a bunch of plays for people to see on film. We tried to get a W AND give our injured guys more time to heal. Didn't work out BUT end of the day SF was always gonna have to win these last two games.

I'll take an L if it means we get guys like Sherm/Tarrt/K Williams and others back vs LA and Seattle. These is when we need them.

A more accurate statement is the Niners needed to beat Seattle and win one of the two games vs the Falcons and Rams.

The strange thing is even now we can still lose to the Rams, beat Seattle and get the #2 or even #1 seed. The Saints have to go on the road vs the Titans and GB is on the road vs the Vikings.

Disagree. better team lose games every week in football, if it didn't happen then why watch? You act like it was Alabama vs West Carolina or some s**t lol. It's the NFL the falcons have talent.

So I guess Baltimore, Saints, Packers aren't contenders because they lost to an "inferior" team at one point.

Pointing out FACTS is not an excuse. NOW if you want to say they didn't execute some s**t to the best of their ability that's fine. LIKE dropping INTs, LIKE fumbling the ball on ATL's 35. LIKE not tackling Julio Jones 5 inches shorter of the GL. That sir, is not an excuse it's the reality of football. Sometimes the ball bounces your way and sometimes it doesn't. FWIW I don't expect guys like Reed/Harris/Garland and whoever the f**k is rushing opposite of Bosa to play as well as the starters. Injuries most certainly aren't an excuse.

So please top referring to what I'm saying as pointing out excuses.

That's fair.

No one's sure about the tiebreaker -- it depends on things like how the Redskins and Falcons, of all teams, play. But right now, the Niners still have that tiebreaker vs. the Seahawks, but that can go away quickly if the Packers and Saints both lose and the Eagles and Falcons collect more wins.
we lose to the rams and hawks beat arizona = wildcard road team for us even if we beat seattle in week 17
Sucks that we lost, but what an exhilarating ending.

Second-to-last play of the game Hooper scores.... only to have the call reversed by the booth.

Last play of the game Jones is stopped at the one-yard line... only to have the call reversed by the booth.

Fans of both teams had their heart broken. I don't remember the last time there was an ending that wild.

I'm pretty sure Falcon fans were ok...unless they were rooting for draft position.

That's not correct

i went through a ton of scenarios with the espn playoff machine. maybe its not 100% acccurate or i just didnt explore them all but all signs point to us on the road as 5 or 6 in the wildcard if we lose to the Rams and Hawks beat cards

most were actually pissed (from what I saw on SM). That win took them out of the top 10
I think this team is going to beat the Rams, I really do. So the tiebreaker talk of the Niners and Seahawks going down to strength of victory (the 5th tiebreaker I believe) will probably be moot.

But the way to look at it is compiling the records of the Redskins, Packers, Saints and comparing it to the record of the Eagles, Vikings and Falcons. If the Saints win tonight, then it's 25 wins vs 22 wins -- Niners have the tiebreaker at 12-4 if similar numbers are maintained.

Washington's schedule -- 1-1 (beat Giants at home, lose to Dallas on the road)
Packers -- 1-1 (lose to Vikings on the road, beat Detroit)
Saints -- 1-1 (lose to Titans on the road, beat Carolina)

Vikings -- 2-0 (beat Packers & Chicago at home)
Philly -- 1-1 (lose to the Cowboys, beat the Giants)
Falcons -- 1-1 (beat the Jags, lose on the road to Tampa)

Collective wins after Week 17: 28 vs 26, still have the tiebreaker. If Philly beats the Cowboys and the Falcons beat the Bucs, then it goes to the 6th tiebreaker -- strength of schedule and I have no idea how that plays out.
