Amazing how every damn interviewer/color man manages to forget why our D is so bad.... we are missing 6 starters or rotational starters, and that is out of 11 positions. Krapt, no wonder our D looks so shoddy most of the game. Spoon who had a good yr then got injured again, just was blistered by Goff. But he wasn't alone. With the run around QBs, Lamar, Kyler, goff, and Russ W, we are just lost. Between now and then i hope the DC that so many were worried about might be leaving for a HC job elsewhere (forget that one for now), comes up with an answer to the mobile QBs who move all over the damn field. We need our HC;s assistance here because Saleh sure doesn't have the answer. Wow, once again, the team with the ball last...won.
I believe we have won 3 of our last 5 games on the last play of the game and we've lost 2 of the last 5 games on the last play. Sheesh talk about nail biting, behind puckering...l just hope saleh comes up with. Kyle for a game plan to cover the. Seahawks. We sure didn't do that tonite.
Thank God for Freddy Warner. Man that was a beautiful INT. Honestly with all the replacements on D, the team who looked better tonite was the Rams . Only 2 3rd. And 16 plays was the difference of this game tonite. The rams looked like us on pass coverage those two plays...and they were huge plays.
Still a W is a W...congrats to all....and coach Kyle, please spend time with Saleh to get him ready for the SEA game. We already know what they are going to do. And boy would Dee ever have made a huge difference had he been in. KWON...if you are even partially ready, we need you ,my man.
I agree, the analysts in general have been unfair and biased towards the 49ers most of the season. However, any time a team has as good a record as the Niners do they are going to be under more scrutiny. I think everyone expects a certain drop off on defense given the injuries but the issue is that the D has dropped off so dramatically that it's impossible not to talk about.
Saleh's once-stingy group has given up a whopping 106 points in the last THREE games alone (46, 29, 31 respectively)
and over the last month it has become common place to worry about the 49er D giving up a TD every time they're on the field which is inexcusable, IMHO. Every team is dealing with injuries this time of year but it's a next-man-up league, if Saleh is actually good (and the consensus was that he was a suspect hire from day one) and not simply being propped up by the now-injured all-star D that Lynch assembled for him, then he should be finding ways to get it done and making adjustments accordingly or we can only conclude that he's mediocre at best.
Like you said, Witherspoon regressed a bit so I hope Mosley is back ASAP. Yes, I agree that they play clueless when it comes to the extremely mobile qbs like Jackson, Murray and Wilson but Jared @#%$^ Golff?!? He's not exactly known for his mobility yet he shredded the niners last night because Saleh took forever to adjust to the boot legs. So, I agree that I wouldn't be upset at all if Saleh took a HCing position elsewhere (kinda hoping he does after the last 3-4 weeks) because I think it's becoming painfully apparent that his inexperience as a DC has been largely shielded by steller defensive players.
Now, as a 49er fan and NFL fan for ~ 35 years I would like to address this "a W is a W" attitude that I've seen by too many fans over the years that I find astonishingly short-sighted. Like many long-time fans, I've seen the ups and downs of this team for several decades. HCs and players come and go, good and bad seasons tick by and playoff games are played on occasion. What I've noticed throughout that time is that convincing victories build the momentum that has to be present and peak at the right time -- THIS time of season for teams to have the best shot at a SB title because that momentum builds swagger that sustains them through tough playoff games against tougher opponents. Last night a few fans were mentioning that concept and how the 49ers peaked too early.
"A win is a win" (i.e. unconvincing, uninspiring last-second squeakers) is only true when it comes to seeding and the division title because beyond that it doesn't help a team's chances against tougher opponents like convincing/dominating wins do because of the momentum, confidence and cohesiveness that promotes as I mentioned above. So, it's great that the Niners (barely) pulled off a win last night but it was so unconvincing because they looked like @#$ most of the night and had to come from behind to win it despite playing in their own stadium for the second straight week that it almost felt like a loss as one fan stated last night. Yeah, I get it...coming off an embarrassing trap game loss to the Falcons in Levi's only to BARELY squeak out a MUST-WIN game the very next week at home against the Rams doesn't bode well for their chances in Seattle (whole separate conversation there) so that's why some fans are not jumping for joy and I'm one of them. Watch enough football and you understand why. It's concerning going into Seattle next week (the last game of the regular season) and the playoffs, not reassuring.
Now that I've gotten that off my chest, I can reassure all of you that overall I'm thrilled with the 49ers' improvement this season. Nobody expected them to do as well as they have so I'm overjoyed that the team is competitive again and in the playoffs My pre-season hope was no worse than 10-6 with or without a playoff spot and the Niners exceeded that so long-term I'm optimistic about the future of our young team. They just need to fire Saleh (j/k, maybe not
), get rid of Goodwin, Pettis and Taylor and bring in a deep threat WR. Is that too much to ask, Kyle?
