49ers sign DT Ray Smith, Boston College to PS

6' 1", 300 pounds, Run stuffer-type.

He was a second-team All-CIF pick his senior year, racking up 9.5 sacks in five games. His specialty at B.C. would not be going after quarterbacks, however, but controlling the line of scrimmage. Smith earned third-team All-ACC honors his senior year, starting all 12 games and posting 50 tackles, four for loss. He missed three games due to injury in 2017, but still played in 10 contests (nine starts), making 24 stops, three for loss. Smith played in five games as a true freshman (five tackles, one for loss).

Overview:
Smith's strength at the point of attack is adequate by NFL standards but his lack of functional length and interior disruption hurts his chances for success. Smith's pro day testing forces more tape study, but the lack of disruption and pass rush are unlikely to change which makes a role as a rotational nose tackle unlikely.

Another white DL for Kocurek? I see what he's doing here. He's trying to sneak Bosa off the field for a breather and bringing in a stunt double to confuse the OL. They'll never notice!
