I forget - how did we lose him again, he was taken from our PS, correct?

Yes iirc they needed to move players around and had to drop one down to the PS. They didnt want to lose him but there you are.
I still can not believe that spent a 4th round pick on PUNTER! There could have been an argument made for a fantastic kicker but a punter...?!

That pick could have been used in so many different ways. Additionally, average punters can be found a lot easier in the later rounds, which makes this pick really bad!

I know that this has been discussed on many forums but I am still mad :(

So I took a look at the last draft class once again. FOUR names stuck out to me as major contributors to our success this year.

Nick Bosa #2
Deebo Samuel #36
Dre Greenlaw #148
Justin Skule #183

These four didn't just play, but they all contributed in ways that made us better and helped us win immediately, THIS YEAR. That's a pretty darn successful draft, is it not?

That group already makes it a very successful draft. Count Brunskill too?
Pretty incredible the immediate return on these guys and that's even after losing Hurd for the year.

Yea not the end of the world but was bummed we lost Kaden. Thought he could have developed into a solid #2 TE.

Sarcasm?

Well you have to admit for the bulk of the season we were giving up close to 0 return yards. I don't know what the final number was but it was great for some time.

How much of that can be attributed to having the best gunners in the league?

Just look at the picks again. Are you really b***hed about us taking the best punter in the draft when you look at the other picks?

Dude, no need for the harsh words. I am happy with the picks but still confused about the 4th round pick...it's not a big deal.

Brunskill didn't come out of the draft.

I don't have the stat in front of me right now, but for a long stretch of the season, the 49ers had an NFL best kick off unit. The average starting position for opposing teams was like the 21 yard line. They were one of the few teams that did not attempt to blast the kick out of the endzone all season long. They also had a league low return average, but Dustin Colquitt ended up taking that from Mitch...though Mitch did out net him.

I also don't think any other punter in the NFL had a higher percentage of successful kicks land inside the 20 yard line, and again only Dustin Colquitt had similar FC-Inside the 20 ratios. I could be wrong on that, i have not look at the numbers in weeks.....but generally speaking.....All evidence points toward the 49ers getting one of the better precision kickers in the NFL in the 4th round.

The rebuttal to this is always easy..... First, the punter is above average, and in some metrics bordering on elite.

The second....who......

Who would you take with the 4th that would have had an impact on this season. You have the full blessing of hindsight, you got to watch an entire season of football...what player would you have taken other then Mitch?

And don't forget about the rookie UDFA either.

Round 1, Pick 2: Nick Bosa - Starter, A+
Round 2, Pick 36: Deebo Samuel - Starter, A+
Round 3, Pick 67: Jalen Hurd - IR, but looked very good in PS
Round 4, Pick 110: Mitch Wishnowsky - Starter, elite punter, should be allowed to tackle more, worth the pick, A
Round 5, Pick 148: Dre Greenlaw - Starter, A+
Round 6, Pick 176: Kaden Smith - Waived, picked up by the Giants, Starter, put up decent numbers, C
Round 6, Pick 183: Justin Skule - Started games, extremely good value given his draft status, B
Round 6, Pick 198: Tim Harris - IR, looked good in camp and PS, I think he was stashed as the play at CB has been decent with no need to push him up

UDFA
Azeez Al-Shaair - Solid starter, A (given he's undrafted)
Kevin Givens - Flashed in PS. Brian Baldinger is really high on him. Will get his chance next week.

In all, we picked up 4 drafted starters, 1 URFA starter, 1 UDFA poised to make an impact next week, 1 very solid depth guy that started games, loss only 1 to waivers but was a starter for another team, and suffered only 2 injuries who looked very well in PS. Looking at the impact and contribution that rookie class has had on this team I'd say that was an absolute home run of a haul of rookies. I give that an overall grade of A. Lynch and Shanny deserve a ton of credit on this. This is also a testament to how good the 49ers scouts and talent evaluators are as well. They did a great job. This will go down as one of the more successful draft classes the 49ers have ever had.
