Clearly the most dominant in the playoffs. Outscored their opponents 126-26. The 1984 team that went 15-1 (18-1 overall) may have been the most dominant overall.

That was a great story. It was a young team, just like the current one. The secondary was the best we have had. But the key was that they were too young to realize they weren't supposed to win...but they did.
Other years had more talent but the 81 set the bar that all the rest had to reach.

That team started 1-2 and then went 15-1. I picked 1984 but I just as easily could have picked 1981.
Talk about no respect from the media. The Chron ran an article sometime (after or during the season I don't remember) on the number of fortunes Niners fans made betting on them during that run.
I pulled out my dvd box set tonight:
America's Game The Super Bowl Champions San Francisco 49ers Collection.
The 5 video box set is a recap of each super bowl season. It discusses how they got there, interviews key players, and shows highlights of key games.
It just reinforced how much I loved that 81 team. From the agony of sucking to the feeling of invincibility. The end of one dynasty (the Cowboys) to the start of our dynasty. The media ignored the team that year until they beat Dallas the second time, in the NFC championship game featuring The Catch.
The team was full of young players and rookies who had enthusiasm and didn't really know any better plus a few key free agency signings that brought it all together: Fred Dean and Hacksaw Reynolds.
Also Walsh calling plays and correctly predicting that there would be no defenders around for 10 yards (Shanny anyone?)
What a great story of a team and franchise who nobody respected or gave a chance. They proved everyone wrong, won over the city of San Francisco, and a dynasty was born. So amazing.
Just to give some cred to the 2012 team, they did have to play an incredibly better Seahawks team twice a year, and get past a younger Aaron Rodgers and Matt Ryan (way better that Crook Cousins). But I love this current team, from John Lynch to Kyle Nelson. Go 49ers #6!!!!!!!

When Joe Montana was asked which was the best SB team of all, he quickly said, "1984". Only one loss and that was caused by a terrible pass interference call on Eric Wright in the end zone. After the game the referee admitted he blew the call. That call prevented the Niners from finishing undefeated. Easily the best of all-time. 18-1.
I could not agree more with you on this
1984-Their finest hour
1989-Men against boys
1994-Unfinished business
1981-Just getting started
1988-Jokes on you, haters
This is my favorites/best team list but I must say 1981 was the most important year in Niners history, specifically the 1981 NFC Championship game. I'm sure we call all agree on that. I can't comment on pre Superbowl era because I did not exist till 68
I was 7 when we won our last one but I grew up with a steve young/jerry rice poster on my wall for years. That being said, if we win this year this will be my favorite. I love how together this team is.
Looks like the box set I referenced above can actually be viewed on Youtube! I think they are a must watch for fans. They are just over an hour each so I'm watching one each night this week. Enjoy!!!
Anyone else have the "49ers:5 greatest games" it has all the original broadcast of all 5 SB victories. I recommend watching all of them leading up to next Sunday
