I distinctly remember watching this before the Bucs-Raiders SB in 2002. It was a documentary about a 49ers tight end who was described as the worst player to win a Super Bowl. I can't remember the name. I do remember Steve Young saying at one point, "I'd rather throw it to the guard and take the penalty".
Any help?

Well, Brent Jones was our starting te and no way did SY think that way about him. Iirc the depth was ex London Monarchs Ted Popson. That was not a team which could afford great depth players nor one which was good at drafting, so Popson was something of a filler. Accepting, then, that he was nowhere near NFL starter material, I recall him as being an ok receiver and certainly not the worst player to win a super bowl. If SY did actually say this, perhaps he was being facetious? I don't remember him running down his fellow players. Of course it doesn't have to be Popson but with a starter as good as Jones I don't recall us carrying much depth.

It was a long time ago, to be sure. I don't know why I remember that one or that one Super Bowl pregame.
