Niners Hire Tony Oden as Secondary Coach

Nothing much playcall related here, just good CB patience and technique. Cover 1 robber, XHoward knows that he has help to the inside (reds). So he gets into a trail position with outside leverage. If the WR breaks inside where help is, Howard can undercut the route. If the WR breaks outside, Howard is in position to smother the route.

This is one of the terrible INTs thrown by Darnold (he threw 6 INT's to MIA in 2018). I saw MIA use this coverage a number of times and it's not something I see often. Maybe I don't watch enough of other teams. It's a creative way to switch from Middle of Field Closed to MoFOpen.

At the snap, the CBs bail to to play as Cover 2 safeties. The deep middle safety plays the pipe (middle intermediate/deep). It's Tampa 2 (oranges are underneath zones).


Darnold going with his Cover3 presnap read, stares it down and tries to cram it into the backside Dig, which is normally open against Cover3. If the 49ers do this in 2020, I will credit it to Oden.

Give me Corey Raymond from LSU. That secondary has produced quality starters for almost every year. Or at least every year that one declares.
