Eddie D. had blown through so much money in the freewheeling, newfangled free agency time of the late '90s, that his cash flow was severely impacted. He somehow got the idea that riverboat gambling could fix all that quickly and maybe be a highly profitable long term investment.
Now, here's what many people get wrong. Eddie D. was never charged with, and so was never convicted, of offering to bribe the governor of Louisiana. Rather, to do business in Louisiana, the governor would make clear to potential investors that they had to do business with him first. The governor, not Eddie D., "asked for" the bribe. Eddie D.'s felony was agreeing to it and trying to pay. Legally, that's what the charge and the conviction said.

There are a lot of you in here that give one person sooooo much power over your lives. Those of you that become so angered by this one individual need to take a deep look inside and see what's really important in life. One person in office is not worth your misery.

I'm no lawyer. I'm going by my recollection. The exact legal charge he was convicted of is unusual. I thought it meant what I described. I'm not going to look it up. You can, or perhaps some lawyer will chime in.

Agreed. I get not supporting his policies, having issues with certain parts of his personal history or just not liking him as a person.
But seeing so many people lose their collective **** over pardoning an individual, putting ketchup on steak or tweeting "Good morning!" is kinda funny but also very bizarre to me...

"misprision of a felony"
Ten second search said you're right.

If I'm Eddie D, do I really want to be associated in history (outside of SF and Youngstown) with Pardon Fest 2020 along side Blago, Kerik and Milken? Not so sure it helps his legacy.
