Actually it's because of Trey Lance being on the team. As well as special teams depth, regarding returns.

If Mac Jones were our backup QB, I don't think Benjamin would still be on the team.

If that were he case, why was he signed to begin with, if Benjamin's talents were going to be wasted with Jimmy at QB, or with Mac if he was a backup? He alluded alluded to this earlier.

He was signed as depth player/practice squad player nothing more than that. He has speed and questionable hands. He's a lesser Trent Sherfield. Nothing to do with QBs.

It really sucked that Benjamin couldn't come down with the rare Jimmy bomb.

Same with the no PI call on his bomb to Kittle.

He was signed for special teams.... if he was going to make the team. He wasn't signed to be a starter. That's why it cracks me up when some bash him for not attacking the ball like Steve Smith or Deebo.. etc. If he was that kind of player, he would be starting on another team or be making ALOT more money.

Anyway as far as Lance. I'm saying Kyle seemed to have a plan where if Trey was used in plays, that certain players would be used as well for his *packages* (trust me I hate the sound of that too)...

So for the longest time Travis was still on the practice squad, BUT they finally activated him when Trey was needed to start for against the Cards......AND he was targeted early in that game... before Deebo and Aiyuk (do I agree with that? No)

The reason I say he's still on the team is because Trey is still one hit away from having to go out there to start, and Travis already knows the offense. If we didn't have a strong armed backup QB, I don't think they would use an active roster spot or a roster spot in general for Travis.

Kyle likes to run the ball, Travis is light...and is not a good run blocker. Kyle doesn't know where to use him. I'm surprised he's still active for gamedays. I don't think Travis is good at special teams coverage, again because of his size.

Travis was brought on to the team to be a Punt Returner...and some deep threat speed.

Early in the season we had lots of injuries and we needed roster spots for other positions, so Brandon and Sanu were used as Punt Returners. Travis stayed on the practice squad.

I'm sure Kyle doesn't want to use Aiyuk as a PR, but Kyle is paranoid about turnovers and Brandon catches these punts... so Kyle doesn't want to take the chance of taking him out, especially because every game has been important for us for a while now.

Now some have bashed Kyle (to defend Jimmy) about why use Travis like that on the route if that's not Jimmy's best ability. Actually I don't have an issue with it. Even though the play didn't work out, we still need to do that to keep defenses honest. You would hope Jimmy hits that early next time.
