It was to call his bluff. I wasn't believing any of those trash trades until pen was put to paper
...and it worked. People really don't understand business, lol.
Being able to afford Aiyuk at his asking price was never an issue. He wasn't trying to reset the WR market like Lamb. Paraag and his analytics department simply didn't value Aiyuk where the market also values him. While they were telling Aiyuk he wasn't worth $26 or $27 million, they were telling other teams inquiring about his availability that he was one of the top wide receivers in the league and warranted first-round pick compensation at a minimum. In case anyone forgot, the 49ers called up the Vikings to try and trade for Justin Jefferson. They would have absolutely paid him the bag he got from Minnesota.
During the negotiations, the 49ers ran the same game they ran on Gould in 2019, Kittle in 2020, Deebo in 2022, and Bosa in 2023. Lowball them in the spring, ghost them when they laugh off the offer, re-engage in the summer, and cave to their demands as the deadline to get a deal done approaches. All they've done is pay more in the end when they could have been more reasonable in the beginning.
The 49ers really never agreed with Aiyuk's asking price until they started exhausting their other options. Aiyuk nixed the only trade that would have gotten the 49ers a wide receiver to replace him with the Cooper-Browns trade (which was an insane cap move from the Browns perspective imo). They couldn't get the Raiders to take a lowball offer on Adams. They couldn't get the Broncos to take a lowball offer on Sutton. They were still calling around to multiple teams trying to find a replacement receiver for Aiyuk this past week leading up to the extension being agreed to. The Patriots offered $32 million because money is the only appeal they can offer, not because Aiyuk was demanding it. Contrary to the belief of some, Aiyuk did tell the Patriots he was not interested in signing that extension.
At the end of the negotiation, the 49ers did what they always do. They caved and paid more than they needed to for dragging this out. While most sit here and say "all this for that contract", that's what Aiyuk and his agent were fighting the 49ers for. Aiyuk and his agent were able to negotiate the 49ers up from $22 million to $30 million APY, which is more than what they wanted when the negotiations started and what they wanted in the end. They got the guarantees they wanted. The got the cash flow they wanted. They got a structure that allows them to renegotiate another contract when he's 29.
