NFL DB's are a different animal.

I hope he can take off like Deebo did!!!

Shanahan is going to scheme him open, it should be pretty clear by now that he wants a roster filled with guys on offense that can create huge plays out of nothing and be able to house it from pretty much anywhere on the field.

If your WR1, WR2, WR3, TE and RB are all threats to turn a ten yard pass into a thirty yard gain, that is going to be a nightmare for defenses to deal with, knowing that one poor tackle attempt can lead to a guy like Deebo, Kittle or Aiyuk rumbling through the back end of your defense with a full head of steam.

Great post Phoenix, I guess that's one way of looking at it.

I just wonder why this isn't working with Pettis & Goodwin?

Because 1 is soft and the other can't stay healthy to save his life along with the family issues the last 2 years

Soft can only explain so much. Pettis had a very good and productive season in his first season in the NFL as a rookie WR. Was he soft back then? I would say he was soft and productive.

Maybe "unmotivated" is a better word?

I agree. I would say Pettis has motivation problems. Witherspoon has an EQ problems. I just don't agree when people say Pettis and Witherspoon don't make it because they are soft. They are a bit soft, but at times they are very productive. Especially Witherspoon, early in the last season was playing at a very high level. I have heard so often they don't make it because they are soft, and I simply disagree with that.

That's a good one, probably thought he arrived and didn't work hard during the off season

That is fair, an yes he will need to improve his rout running, but what rookie WR doesn't? I think this showed me more that he understands how criticle routs are and he has the right mentality and quickness and toughness to be a solid fit in the scheme and be a good compliment to Deebo.

Very well stated. "Soft" was a lazy and emotional way for me to describe it.

I still have hopes for Pettis and Witherspoon, particularly Pettis. The dude can play when he makes it important.

Difference in skillsets. Ball skills and vision are a thing, like why Trent Richardson flushed out of the NFL. Goodwin is more of a pure speed guy, not super skilled as a receiver. Pettis has the talent but there's something above the neck that seems to be limiting him. In anycase, Aiyuk shows a lot more aggressiveness and physicality than Pettis ever did in college.

Then we have a problem in evaluating WR's? So is it Lynch or Shanahan?

I mean we not only grabbed Goodwin in free agency, we extended his contract. Same person also moved up to draft Pettis in round 2.

Goodwin (F/A), Sanders (F/A), Pettis, James, Deebo, Trent Taylor, Hurd, and Benjamin (F/A).

Now we move up to draft Aiyuk in round 1 and you believe we got it right?

I hope so

They didn't pay Goodwin $10 mil a year, they signed him as a free agent bargain from Buffalo when the roster had no one. Regardless of his skills, 4.27 speed is still 4.27 speed and there will always be a spot in the NFL for a guy like that if he is focused. He had an amazing season in 2017 so I don't regret that signing one bit.

Pettis had great college tape, seems to show a lack of motivation. They responded by drafting Deebo, who was a monster in college and has been a monster in the NFL and now drafting someone in Aiyuk that was pretty much the only receiver of note for ASU and someone who was carrying their passing game.

Beyond that if healthy, Taylor and Hurd could really fill things out and make this a very nice WR corps.
Just a note PHX that was one helluva call on Aiyuk...man did you ever ace that . "Wouldn't last til #31 and would probably be gone at 24-25." Prescient all the way. 4+/4+

Answer to #1 is "no" in my book. Goodwin was never really intended to be more than a role player during the rebuild, and Pettis is very talented but seems to have checked out mentally. Kyle has pretty clearly learned and changed the way he approaches the position. Deebo and Sanders are combinations of talent, desire, toughness and love for the game. Hurd may be injured but he is fits those criteria. Aiyuk seems to fit that as well. May have been an early problem, but Kyle and Lynch seem to have changed to accommodate lessons learned. Don't see a problem with either of them... or Aiyuk!

Yeah I don't know why people consider Goodwin a flop. He was amazing for us year 1. Had he not gone thru the personal issues I don't think we are even talking about trading him.

Pettis proved year 1 that he has the talent and capabilities to be something in this league. I wouldn't quit on him after 1 bad year and I don't think Kyle is either. If this dude can figure it out mentally with Deebo, Aiyuk and KB this WR core will become a major strength.
