Like I said, his speed on tape looks much closer to 4.3 than 4.5
22 mph is 22 mph
That might or might not drop his 40 time below 4.4 , depends on his stride. I would not bet against him tho.
Denzel Mimms pulled off a rare feat of breaking 20 mph in his 40....his time was 4.38. Its pretty rare to be able to reach 20.2 MPH in only 40 yards. ( i have no idea what his top MPH is...i would guess around 24 mph based on a 10.2 100 meter time)
Ruggs hit 19.16 mph in his 40 and his time was 4.27. He has been recorded at 23.97 mph during a game.
I say all the time I could care less about 40 times...but MPH absolutely matters as a tool for all NFL player. MPH effects tackling angles.
The NFL does not offer as many opportunities to run wide open long enough to hit peak MPH...Its why 100meter guys do not dominate the NFL....but it does absolutely matter. MPH is what makes Randy Moss...well Randy Moss and not Brett Perriman.
I don't think anyone that watches Aiyuk's tape cares what his 40 times comes back as, but when you see him walk off and score...its nice to know that it looks like that trait will transition to the NFL.
Not that football is played in math class, but Deebo Samuel hit 21.1 MPH in a game. It looks like Aiyuk will be roughly a half yard per second faster then him running wide open.
The only question remaining is how much yardage does it take to get him to max speed.
Great post.
