Like I said, his speed on tape looks much closer to 4.3 than 4.5

22 mph is 22 mph

That might or might not drop his 40 time below 4.4 , depends on his stride. I would not bet against him tho.

Denzel Mimms pulled off a rare feat of breaking 20 mph in his 40....his time was 4.38. Its pretty rare to be able to reach 20.2 MPH in only 40 yards. ( i have no idea what his top MPH is...i would guess around 24 mph based on a 10.2 100 meter time)

Ruggs hit 19.16 mph in his 40 and his time was 4.27. He has been recorded at 23.97 mph during a game.

I say all the time I could care less about 40 times...but MPH absolutely matters as a tool for all NFL player. MPH effects tackling angles.

The NFL does not offer as many opportunities to run wide open long enough to hit peak MPH...Its why 100meter guys do not dominate the NFL....but it does absolutely matter. MPH is what makes Randy Moss...well Randy Moss and not Brett Perriman.

I don't think anyone that watches Aiyuk's tape cares what his 40 times comes back as, but when you see him walk off and score...its nice to know that it looks like that trait will transition to the NFL.

Not that football is played in math class, but Deebo Samuel hit 21.1 MPH in a game. It looks like Aiyuk will be roughly a half yard per second faster then him running wide open.

The only question remaining is how much yardage does it take to get him to max speed.

Great post.
This is kind of silly. Trying to figure out how many body lengths faster one guy is over another is impossible since people don't run the same speed all the time. When you watch the combine they run twice for a reason. Some players are close from one run to the next but others are a 10th of a second different. Speeds can easily vary in a game based on surface, weather conditions and on the type of pattern ( more cuts are going to slow the WR down). These guys are all fast enough to play and that's what counts.

That's kinda the point of the thread post MPH post.

A large portion of the 40 is training. You don't run the 40 like you run in football. But your Stride is your Stride. Hence why MPH is important. Stride is pretty consistent and does not have large variations from day to day.

I have told the story here before, I went from a 4.7 to a 4.47 after a summer camp on the 40. It has NO bearing on football, for the sole reason you need your gait shorter for change of direction in football.

You can work with a track coach, (as Denzel Mimms has CLEARLY done) but there is only much that can be done.

We are MUCH MUCHHHHH better off with a Aiyuk and Deebo who are straight up football players that happen to be fast then sprinters playing football.

As much as you or I might shrug at conversations like this, people want to categorize players. Its natural and happens in every sport. In football speed is one of the ways people do it. Its a conversation that was taking place when we watched our first football game, and its a conversation that is going to take place long after we watch our last football game....its just the way things are.

Yup I've stated 4.4 just to be conservative. That's still fast as s**t.

I say 4.38

I say 4.36
Reading about how Kyle said he's going to give Aiyuk every opportunity schematics wise is straight
Also believe it was a small jab at the Pettis situation with "the guy is completely committed to me in being as good as God intended him to be". I also believe/hope Kyle will be on a mission to show everyone the best Jimmy G possible. Throw Kittle and Deebo into this recipe with a healthy Jerrick and Hurd in the mix, buckle up boys cause the offense has the potential to be an absolute show

I can't wait to see Deebo and Aiyuk tear it up this season - it's going to be fun to watch.

Watching some tape of Aiyuk and I'll tell you, he reminds me a lot of Sammy Watkins. He's explosive once he has the ball in his hands and wins in similar routes. Hopefully he has better health history than Watkins, but that is who I think he could end up being.
