I also hope we can keep Williams, but don't want to lock into a long term deal that we can't get out of for many years. When players like Bosa need to be signed in a few years, we NEED to resign players like that.....even more then overpaying for Williams.
That will be a problem because Williams won´t want a short-term deal and he´ll ask 20M per year.
If we let Williams walk the reality is that we don´t have a plan for his replacement and that means the O-line will get even worse.
The way I see it is that we can sign Williams to a long term deal and give him just around 5 or 6 millions this year with 2022 and 2023 almost fully guaranteed. Not ideal because we´re talking about 55M the next 2 years in one player but as I said, we can´t let him go or our starting QB will get killed.
I can remember some guys here saying at the beginning of the season that Williams was gonna give us a discount because he said he loves playing for Shanny
I have no issue giving Trent a 5yr deal worth $20M a yr, with $40M GTD. They can't let him walk, I don't see him pitting other teams vs the 49ers, if the cap is only $175M, not many teams will be able to offer him a giant deal, he said winning was important, so going to a rebuild like the Jags, cause they have $74M makes no sense, when they'll have a rookie QB, and new coach, and of course a rebuild.
He is the single most important player to keep.

If he's asking for top OT money - I say pass. We'll be able to sign our guys with the money we save.

Weaken the O line and sign JG who fans say needs better protection? That doesn't make sense. I assume you would want them to draft a tackle in the 1st round to replace Williams. So now they have a rookie protecting Jimmy and his often injured legs.

It depends on what they agree on and how it's structured. He's earned the right to be paid well more than Jimmy has. I don't know if they can sign both but if Jimmy isn't protected well you know every single one of his supporters are going to complain about it. They complain now with Williams. Unless they get Sewell I wouldn't count on his replacement being as good as Williams.

Why wouldn't a top elite OT be asking for top money? Again how do you guys plan on winning without top tier talent?

It tends to follow that a top tackle gets top tackle money. Seldom does it work any other way.

He may have earned the right to get paid well from what he's done in the past but sure as hell not what he did last year to be paid top tackle money

It'll be between $18M and $20M per year. We just need to accept it.

Guys,
By making Ford, and Richburg June 1 cuts next year we will have almost 48 million in cap space. By restructuring Jimmy you could have easily 60 million in Space. Plenty of money for T Williams, Juice, Verrett, Warner, K,uan Williams. And plenty left over.
Also, Their is talk that the cap may be around 195 million instead of 175 . That would be an additional 20 Million in cap space. That's close to 80 in cap.
We have plenty of money to spend, just spend wisely.

Cutting Rich and Ford only frees up 10 mill in cap space
