Money.

Williams is making 12 million this year, Staley was due for 10.

We couldn't afford both of them due to cap constraints.
Just reported Staley is retiring
Espn just reported on espn Staley retiring . We love you joe.

Yep saw it right now from Schefter
Very sad to see Joe go, he is an all timer and should have his name in the ring of honor. But this is a boss move by the front office. Huge, have to assume the detention comes the minute Joe is officially off the books.

Not enough money.

It would be cool though to see if Joe would restructure then put him on IR so he can technically be on the team.

Enjoy retirement Joe, you deserve it.

STALEY RETIRES

Great move to get Williams and it looks like Staley actually helped!

Wow, ShanaLynch have stones passing on Wirfs. It doesn't sound like the TW trade was done when they made that pick.

Absolutely stupid.
So Williams will plug in Staley's hole but still interior line is a concern.

Adam S. confirmed Staley informed them of his retirement BEFORE the draft and they STILL passed on Wirfs.

Unreal.

What if the FO didn't think he was good?

Agree Trent has a nasty aggressiveness to him which may help our oline out even more this season

What kind of contract do you guys think Williams will get? 4 or 5 years?

I don't know about you guys but I'd rather have Javon Kinlaw and Trent Williams than Tristan Wirfs (who may or may not be an NFL LT) and whatever DT could've been available to them in the draft, if not Kinlaw.

Love it . We need that nastiness. Can't wait to see him play vs Seahawks and cowboys this upcoming year.

Haven't had that since we he got Larry Allen in free agency.

I think so. Synder had no choice but to let Shanny win this trade.

I thought this forum always complain about the team not making bold moves. Wonder if this move silence them for the next 4 hours.

Trent williams trade made it easier to let go of joe
