If the team doesn't re-sign Williams then what's the point of keeping Garoppolo? The OL will most likely be one of the worst in the league. No point in keeping a QB with limited mobility behind an OL that will have him running for his life.
Trade the farm and move up into the top 5 for a QB if Trent doesn't stay.

💯
Why not use the draft to obtain a few more offensive line studs for Jimmy G. to work with? Don't you believe that might be a viable solution?

Because I can't see JG performing better in that scenario for two reasons: (1) Foerster isn't known for coaching guys up fast and turning average or rooks into studs in the same year which means (2) that OL will be 2 seasons away from playoff/SB caliber competition which mean JG contract will be up and we almost certainly look for an improvement more than we are today.
If the OL is a 2-season project w/o Williams, then I say start over at QB too.
I will agree with your point that it takes time for a new line to gel. At one time, it took 2-3 seasons. Head coaches no longer have that type of time frame.
Give any coach, including Foerster, the tools he needs to work with and you will see positive results. I remember similar complaints about Saleh. Until Shanahan and Lynch used the draft and free agency to give him the horses he needed. Look what happened.
The 49ers are in a great position to get four picks through the first two rounds of the draft if they trade back. Use those picks on at least TWO linemen, and I guarantee you will see dramatic improvement in OL play next season.

I see the 49ers are handing out contracts to free agents. And, what's this? NO CONTRACT FOR TW??? But, but, but, according to all of you TW is worth $80 KAZILLION per year! Where is his deal? Why don't the 49ers just lock him up already?
Could it be that he just is not worth it (yes)? Could all of you who want to back up a Brink's truck for the guy be wrong (yes)? Is the demand for TW really going to be that high (no)? Can a better, and much cheaper, replacement be found through the draft (yes)?
No more excuses. No more, "well, we don't know what the cap number is yet, so that's why he isn't signed." No more BS. The 49ers ARE signing players. The 49ers are handing out some fiscal rewards. Brunskill and EMan are examples of this.
So? Where's the big money for TW? Why isn't he signed? Why haven't the 49ers extended an offer? Why are they willing to let him test free agent waters???
If the niners sign Trent Williams for what about 21 million per year on a three or four your deal whatever it may be are you going to come back in here and admit you were wrong? Thanks
Yes
Will you?
You really going to say that? That is hilarious
Don't know about that last comment from the peanut gallery.....but of course I will. Although now it's looking like who the hell knows. I may have to eat a whole crow pie after betting Russel Wilson stays with Seattle
I think it's a political thing. I think.

Neither of those guys were all that successful. Iupati was a phenomenal run blocker, weak pass blocker. Davis had so much potential but lacked work ethic and retired early. Trent Brown was a better overall pick than either one but he wasn't a great fit for what Shanahan wants to do on offense and the Raiders just cut him loose too.
Joe Staley was really the last time that they knocked it out of the park when drafting an OL. Before that it was Jeremy Newberry in 1998.

Is this really breaking news?
Low bar for hot takes these days.
Did you read it? Just Mike Garafolo saying they're trying to get it done. No one is saying it's breaking news

Trent is going to get 24M per year from a bad team with a lot of cap space and a young and promising QB.
Jaguars and Bengals come to mind.

If Trent stays true to his word, he won't go to a rebuilding team, he said he wanted to win, and not go to a team rebuilding.
