49ers OT Trent Williams is officially a free agent—as we mentioned in the column this morning, I've heard San Francisco is willing to go to $20 million per for him.

The Chiefs and Colts are two contenders with holes at left tackle, and money to spend.

KC is probably going to sign him. They've cleared up the cap space to do so. They might be able to convince him to sign for less than what we're offering since they offer the best chance of winning a SB.
I don't think there is any chance he chooses to sign somewhere else for less money. More money? Yes, but not for less money.

The Chiefs can basically guarantee him multiple Super Bowl rings over the next few years (or at least as close to a guarantee as it gets in the NFL). How do we compete with that if the money is essentially the same?

I never said he would sign cheaper with the Niners. Just seems unlikely he will choose to go somewhere else for less money. Unless he doesn't really want to live in the bay. He knows this playbook and works well in it. He has already gelled in the lockerroom. It's not like we are not a good football team. I don't think he would leave somewhere else for cheaper if last season he liked being here. Which I haven't heard anything to suggest that he didn't.
