Defensive tackles are a dime a dozen compared to talented offense tackles.
How is it stupid, they just got a 7 time pro bowl LT for peanuts, so what they didn't know for sure on Day 1, they got him, can't people just be happy and not get all pissed off. Plus why draft a rookie LT to protect Jimmy, doubt a rookie would do well on a SB roster, sorry never happening. Plus Wirfs is a RT, not a LT, and MM isn't moving to LT.
But still Upset that we traded away more draft picks rather than players. We're way beyond that, we need to be trading players not picks. And the last thing we should have done after a draft with like a record breaking low amount of picks (4 now!) is trade away 2021 picks. We have no 3rd rounder next year now.
All we have left this year is a 6th an 7th. This draft is over. We came out of the 2020 draft with 2 rookies basically. Can't believe it.
I love that lynch is willing to trade an move around unlike baalke was but he's getting way too fluid an giving up way too many resources that we're gonna need in the future.
What if they don't want our players? Do we just pass on Trent Williams and role with Brunskill?
If staley was retiring, draft an OT. If teams don't want our players trade them away for 7th rd picks or cut them. It's only hurting us an our roster to keep them.
I think this is unfair because Joe has played significantly more games than Trent Williams has, but it does show just how good of a player Trent Williams is.

Just to be TECHNICALLY correct, we traded away our 2020 5th round pick, and our 2021 3rd round pick for T. Williams. If Williams leaves in FA after the 2020 season, we COULD net a 3rd round comp pick in the 2022 draft, NOT 2021 like most on here are implying. The 3rd round comp pick, is also basically a early 4th round pick, since comp picks come after the initial round ends, but before the 4th round begins.
I like the move, and I personally hope Williams signs an extension with us right now for something like 5 years and 90-100 million with like 60 million guaranteed. This way we lock him up long term, and can get out from his deal in 3 years if he declines too rapidly. Here's to hoping Brunskill takes that RG spot, and dominates.
I don't know about you guys but I'd rather have Javon Kinlaw and Trent Williams than Tristan Wirfs (who may or may not be an NFL LT) and whatever DT could've been available to them in the draft, if not Kinlaw.
+1
+2
Agreed, although I think keeping Buckner, then trading Armstead for a 2nd or 3rd would've been way better than the direction we went.
Armstead would have had to be a sign and trade since he was a free agent.
I think this is unfair because Joe has played significantly more games than Trent Williams has, but it does show just how good of a player Trent Williams is.
I don't care about the comparisons, I like both players.
One for what he's done, and one for what he is about to do.

Doesn't mean we can't still trade players like Goodwin, Brieda, Colemna, and etc for picks. The last time I check there is no trade deadline in the offseason.

I don't get why a lot are upset on not getting Wirfs when it's obvious the team didn't think highly of him as well as the other teams in front and even the Jets who took Becton before him. This is not some generational LT whose a can't miss while folks mad we got Williams a 7 time pro bowler whose younger than Staley and honestly better for pretty much a peanut butter and jelly sandwich

I think some people REALLY over-value draft picks. I get it, it's the excitement of something new and unknown. But it's also a crap shoot. Trent Williams is a PROVEN pro bowler. For a 5th rounder and a 3rd next year?

Here's what helped set into motion the Trent Williams' trade: six-time Pro Bowl and All-Decade OT Joe Staley is expected to retire due to health concerns, per league sources. The 35-year-old Staley wanted to inform the 49ers in a timely way to help find a replacement. They have.
Great move to get Williams and it looks like Staley actually helped!
Wow, ShanaLynch have stones passing on Wirfs. It doesn't sound like the TW trade was done when they made that pick.
Absolutely stupid.

Wirfs is a RG to RT if needed.

We should get a third round comp
Pick for 2021 draft for the Sanders departure.
I'm shocked there are people that think this is bad. I know it's sad Staley is retiring, but there was not one OT in the draft as good as Williams, this team is too good to rely on unproven rookie OT, or a second year unproven player. LT is too important of a position especially For a super bowl contender. For a 3 and a 5? That's a no brainer, great value. Good move!

For this year anything more than a 6th or 7th rounder ya it does. What is it the 6th rd now? We don't need more 2021 picks we need more 2020 picks. Our window is open now. This is only viable if their plan is to make a run in 2021 and not 2020 which I'm suspecting more an more.
I want a little attitude, some rough-around-the-edges mentality that we're kinda lacking.
I don't want a perennial Jovan Belcher Commitment to Excellence Award winner that KC seems to covet, but I'd like something that gives us more of an edge when it counts. We need chips on our shoulder--the feel good UDFA stories are great but losing a superbowl is making me look elsewhere for inspiration.
